Nollywood stars, filmmakers and leading entertainment industry personalities gathered at Fame, Lekki, Lagos, on Sunday for the Nigerian premiere of 19, the highly anticipated crime drama written and directed by filmmaker Tola Odunsi.

The premiere attracted a strong turnout of industry heavyweights, with Toyin Abraham, Kunle Afolayan, Deyemi Okanlawon and Wale Ojo amongst the notable personalities who walked the red carpet.

Also in attendance were Linda Ejiofor, Femi Adebayo, Darey Art Alade, Kunle Remi and members of the film’s cast and crew, who came together to celebrate the movie ahead of its nationwide cinema release.

Led by Stan Nze, Sola Sobowale, Bisola Aiyeola, Deyemi Okanlawon, William Benson and Ademola Adedoyin, 19 boasts an impressive ensemble cast that also includes Boma Akpore, Helen Enado Odigie, Tayo Faniran and Charles Okafor.

But beneath the glamour of its star-studded cast and premiere, 19 tells a much more urgent story.

Set against the backdrop of Nigeria’s battle with internet fraud, the film follows Ndubuisi Madueke, played by Stan Nze, a young man whose circumstances and desperation eventually draw him into the world of internet fraud.

His journey takes a decisive turn after he encounters Usuanlele, a wealthy and influential figure in his neighbourhood who becomes his mentor.

Rather than simply portraying internet fraud as a criminal act, 19 explores the circumstances that can push young people towards it, including poverty, unemployment, corruption, peer pressure and the relentless pursuit of financial success.

According to the writer and Director of 19, Tola Odunsi, “Every crime has a story before the crime. With 19, I wanted to tell that story, to ask how a brilliant young man can move from wanting a better life to losing himself in the pursuit of it. This is not a film about glorifying the fast life; it is about understanding its cost and reminding us that the choices we make today can define the lives we live tomorrow.”

For the Producer Bola Atta, this was at the heart of the decision to make the film.

“Internet fraud is gradually becoming endemic and is eating into the fabric of Nigerian society. Lives are being lost needlessly, and families are being ruined as a result of the wrong choices made by some people.

“Something definitely needs to be done to address this situation. That is why we decided to make a movie that not only reflects this reality but also shows that there is a better path to success, one that does not have to end in tragedy or destruction.”

The response at the premiere was particularly encouraging, with audiences connecting with the film’s themes and its underlying message.

Obi Asika, Director-General of the National Council for Arts and Culture, who attended the premiere, described the film as both timely and necessary.

“19 is an important and timely film. Life is about choices, and we see that play out through Ndubuisi and his best friend, who face similar pressures but take different paths. Ndubuisi chooses the shortcut and pays the price, while his friend reminds us that legitimate pathways remain open to those with talent and discipline. These are the films we need to see more of: real issues, real stories and real decisions, told with courage and consequence.”

Also speaking at the premiere, Dr Busola Tejumola, Senior Vice President of Content at Canal+, said, “ 19 excellently delivers a timely message at a moment when internet fraud, cable piracy and content theft are becoming increasingly sophisticated threats to our society and our industry. The film doesn’t shy away from the real circumstances that push young people towards these choices. It is entertaining, but also necessary storytelling’

The title 19 is a reference to Section 419 of the Nigerian Criminal Code, historically associated with advance-fee fraud, a term that has become synonymous with internet fraud in popular Nigerian usage.

Written and directed by Tola Odunsi and distributed by Nile Entertainment, 19 opens in Nigerian cinemas on September 11.

With its combination of an acclaimed ensemble cast, a compelling crime narrative, and a subject that continues to affect young Nigerians and society at large, 19 arrives in cinemas as more than a movie; it is an invitation to confront a difficult reality and consider the choices that shape the pursuit of success.

Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.

His death was announced by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, on Instagram on Wednesday.

In the statement, the family described the late actor as “The Lion of Lufodo” and asked bloggers and social media influencers to respect its privacy.

“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought, that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo.

Jacobs was one of Nigeria’s veteran actors and was widely recognised for his contributions to theatre, television and film.

He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in England and began his acting career in Britain, where he worked with repertoire theatres and appeared in British television productions and international films.

After returning to Nigeria, he became a prominent figure in the country’s film industry and was regarded as one of the veteran figures of Nollywood.

Jacobs won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2007. He also received the Industry Merit Award at the 2013 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards and the MAA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016.

He was conferred with the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic in 2011.

Jacobs was married to fellow veteran actress, Joke Silva.

Iweh Pascal Odinaka, the Nigerian dancer popularly known as Poco Lee, will appear before the Snaresbrook Crown Court in the United Kingdom on February 8, 2027, for a plea hearing.

The date was fixed after his scheduled appearance on Tuesday could not proceed because the charge sheet was unavailable.

Poco Lee had been due in court on September 15 for a plea and trial preparation hearing on the charges against him.

He, however, did not enter a plea because the charge sheet was not available.

Although the dancer was not present, the courtroom was reportedly filled with Nigerians who came to observe the proceedings, with some forced to wait outside.

The court has now set February 8, 2027, for the plea hearing, while the trial is scheduled to begin on March 8, 2027. It had earlier confirmed that the dancer was granted bail on September 11.

Poco Lee faces charges of attempted rape, two counts of rape and two counts of assault by penetration. He was previously remanded in custody following his arrest in the UK over the allegations.

In a recent Instagram live session with social media personality VeryDarkMan, Poco Lee maintained that he did not commit the alleged sexual offences.

He also said music star Burna Boy would not have supported him if he were guilty.

“If I did what someone said I did, I would say I am suffering my sins. As I did not do anything, my mind is as pure as anything. No one would want to attach themselves to something like that. And for Burna Boy and Jago to stand for me,” he said.

“I am a jolly good fellow. Even when I did not do anything.”
