BREAKING: Lagos Govt. Clears Dowen College Students, Staff Of Sylvester’s Death, Orders Release of Suspects [Official Statement]

Published

on

The Lagos State Government has exonerated the five students and five employees of Dowen College linked to the death of a 12-year-old student, Sylvester Oromoni, in the state.

Also cleared by the government from being responsible for the death of the young boy, a nephew to Delta state deputy governor, Kingsley Otuaro, was the management and school building in Lekki.

The students cleared by the state government were: 16-year-old Favour Benjamin, Edward Begue (16), Ansel Temile (14) and Kenneth Inyang (15) and 15-year-old Micheal Kashamu, the son of the late senator, Buruji Kashamu.

They were also cleared by the government of belonging in any unlawful society including secret cult, due to insufficient facts to establish the offence.

Staff cleared by the government through the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), were: Celina Uduak, Valentine Igboekweze, Hammed Ayomo Bariyu, Adesanya Olusesan Olusegun and one Adeyemi.

They were set-free of the offence of Negligent Act Causing Harm contrary to section 252 of the Criminal Law Ch. C17, Vol.3, Laws of Lagos State 2015.

The DPP, in a document containing the legal advice to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID and the trial magistrate, Magistrate Olatunbosun Adeola, claimed that the 10 suspects were not responsible for the boy’s death.

In the advice signed by signed Adetutu Oshinusi, it was stated that the case of Oromoni junior was not murdered nor was the student poisoned.

According to the advice, the interim and final autopsy reports issued by the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital and toxicology report of postMortem samples and that of the Central Hospital, Warri were in agreement as to the cause of death namely: Septicaemia, Lobar Pneumonia with Acute Pyelonephritis, Pyomyositis of the right ankle and Acute Bacteria Pneumonia due to severe Sepsis.

The DPP advice further stated that the result of the toxicology was also not indicative of any toxic or poisonous substance in the body of the deceased.

The DPP’s legal advice, therefore, concluded that based on these findings, there is no prima facie case of murder, involuntary manslaughter and or malicious administering of poison with intent to harm against the five students.

“From available facts in the duplicate case file, the investigation carried out by the Police did not reveal that any secret society name, tattoo or insignia of any unlawful society was found in the possession of any of the suspects during the investigation carried out by the Police.

“To hold otherwise would amount to sniffing for an offence and a speculative act which is not permitted in law. It is trite law that suspicion no matter how grave cannot be a ground for conviction”.

The state, therefore, directed that all the suspects should be released if they were still in the custody of the law enforcement agency in the state, according to the document obtained by Channels.

Police Arrest 14 Suspected Traffic Robbers On Lekki–Epe Expressway

Published

on

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested 14 suspected traffic robbers along the Lekki–Epe Expressway within the last two weeks, following growing complaints by motorists over theft of vehicle parts in traffic.

The arrests were carried out by operatives of the Tactical Squad, Elemoro, at different locations along the busy corridor, the command’s spokesperson, CSP Abimbola Adebisi, disclosed in a post on X on Tuesday.

“Fourteen suspected traffic robbers have been arrested by the Tactical Squad, Elemoro, within the last two weeks at different locations along the Lekki–Epe Expressway,” Adebisi said.

She described the operation as “a clear demonstration of the Command’s commitment to improving security and protecting road users along the corridor,” while urging residents to remain vigilant.

“See something, say something,” the police spokesperson added.

The development comes amid heightened public concern over traffic-related robberies in the Lekki axis, particularly the theft of car parts while vehicles are stuck in congestion.

Earlier, tech influencer Fisayo Fosudo had raised the alarm on X, lamenting repeated attacks on his vehicle.

“Today makes it the fourth time that these boys on the street will steal my car’s parts in Lagos traffic,” Fosudo wrote.

His post sparked further reactions from motorists, including a user with the handle #fimiletoks, who warned drivers about a specific pattern of targeting.

“If you drive the RX 350 2017–2022 model, you are a target at night on Lekki–Epe,” the user said. “You will replace side mirrors and that black cover behind the mirrors every other month. One mirror costs over ₦100,000, and it’s in high demand. They disguise as beggars or hawkers.”

Residents and road users have long complained about criminals exploiting traffic gridlock along the Lekki–Epe Expressway to snatch valuables and vehicle parts, often operating under the guise of street trading or begging.

The police said investigations into the arrested suspects are ongoing, assuring motorists of increased patrols and tactical operations to curb the menace and restore confidence along the route.

The Deputy Head of Mission of the British High Commission, Simon Field, has visited world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, in hospital following a fatal road accident along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

According to a statement by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to Ogun State Governor, Kayode Akinmade, on Monday, Field met with Joshua during the visit and also held discussions with Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, and his Lagos State counterpart, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, as British officials continue to monitor developments surrounding the incident.

“The British High Commission was formally notified of the accident. Officials of the Mission are monitoring developments and remain in contact with the hospital and the Ogun State Government.

“The Deputy Head of Mission, Mr. Simon Field, visited the hospital and met with Anthony Joshua and the two governors. The families of the deceased have also been contacted through the High Commission,” the statement read.

The accident, which occurred around midday on Monday, involved a Toyota Lexus jeep conveying Joshua and three other passengers.

The statement confirmed that two occupants of the vehicle died in the crash and were identified as Ayodele Kelvin Olu, a 36-year-old Nigerian-British citizen, and Gami Sina, a 36-year-old British citizen.

Following the crash, Abiodun visited the Lagos hospital where Joshua was receiving treatment and was later joined by Sanwo-Olu.

Both governors reportedly remained at the hospital for several hours to monitor the situation and ensure the boxer received appropriate medical care.

Speaking on the development, Abiodun said he went to the hospital immediately after receiving information about the accident and personally supervised Joshua’s treatment alongside Sanwo-Olu.

“As soon as I was informed, I headed straight to the hospital and was later joined by the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu. We both took charge of the situation, oversaw Anthony Joshua’s care, and remained at the hospital for over seven hours,” the governor said.

Other senior officials who visited the hospital included the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade.

The Ogun State Government said Joshua remained in a stable condition and was receiving appropriate medical attention, adding that it was satisfied with the quality of care provided by the medical team.

“We are comfortable with the doctors and the quality of care at the hospital, and we appreciate the medical team for their professionalism,” Abiodun said.

President Bola Tinubu was also briefed on the accident.
According to the state government, the President spoke separately with Joshua, his mother, and Abiodun, during which he conveyed his sympathies and condolences.

Quoting the President, Abiodun said, “This immense tragedy has cast a deep shadow over this season. These are very difficult moments, and we must stand firm, united, and encourage one another as brothers and sisters with a shared destiny.”

Authorities have ordered a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident, with the Ogun State Government assuring all that details would be made public after the conclusion of the probe.

Joshua’s condition and other developments related to the incident, the government added, would be communicated to the public as necessary.

There were reports that in a telephone conversation after the accident, Tinubu expressed sympathy to Joshua and his family.

Tinubu also spoke with Joshua’s mother, offering prayers and comfort, and emphasized the need for unity and support during the difficult period.

“In moments like this, we must encourage one another as brothers and sisters with a shared destiny,” the President said.
