Anxiety As Supreme Court Gives Judgement On Naira Redesign Today

Published

on

There’s an anxiety as the Supreme Court gives judgement on the Naira swap today.

The Supreme Court is expected to give its verdict in the cases filed by some States to challenge the propriety of the naira swap policy of the Federal Government.

When parties were last in court on February 22, a nine-member panel of the apex court, led by Justice John Okoro, scheduled judgment for March 3 after entertaining final arguments.

The plaintiffs in the cases are Kaduna, Kogi, Zamfara, Katsina, Lagos, Cross River, Ogun, Ekiti, Ondo, Sokoto, Rivers, Kano, Niger, Jigawa, Nasarawa, Plateau and Abia states.

Upon an application by Bayelsa and Edo states, the court, on February 15 joined the two states as co-defendants with the origin sole defendant, the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF).

In his final submission, lawyer to Kaduna and Kogi states, Abdulhakeem Mustapha (SAN), urged the court to grant all the reliefs being sought in his clients’s suit and dismiss the notices of objection filed by the AGF and Bayelsa State.

Lawyer to Zamfara State, Abiodun Owonikoko (SAN), who adopted the arguments by Mustapha, said his client also filed an application on February 17 praying the court to set aside the directive issued by President Muhammadu Buhari on February 16 directing that only N200 notes should be in use, in disregard of the pending order of the court.

Owonikoko added that the naira redesign policy of the Federal Government was at variance with the provision of Section 17(2)(c) of the Constitution, which says the governmental actions shall be humane.

He added that the policy has occasioned hardship on the people.

Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN), the Attorney General of Lagos State, who represented the state, said his state filed several documents in the case.

One of such documents, he said, is a motion seeking an order prohibiting the defendant/respondent (the AGF) from being granted audience before this court until the defendant or his principal, the President of Nigeria, comply with the order made by this court on the 8th of February, directing that the old notes remain legal tender until the determination of the suit.

Onigbanjo said the suit by Lagos was distinct from the one filed by other states in that it seeks reliefs pertaining to the Lagos State and not the people of the state.

He said the suit was informed by the fact that the naira redesign was affecting the government of Lagos State in the performance of its functions and meeting it’s responsibilities.

The Lagos AG urged the court to deny audience to the AGF and grant the prayers sought in the suit.

Samuel Ologunorisa (SAN), who represented Katsina; Shuaibu Abuwa (SAN) for Cross River; Tunde Afe Babalola SAN, for Ogun); O. O. Olowolafe SAN for Ekiti; Charles Titiloye SAN for Ondo and Georgina Udeh for Sokoto State, all urged the court to dismiss the objection raise against the suit by the AGF and Bayelsa State and proceeded to grant all the reliefs sought in the suit by Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara states.

In their separate cases that were consolidated with the case by Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara states; Rivers, Kano, Jigawa, Nasarawa, Abia argued that the policy was unconstitutional and should be voided.

Kanu Agabi (SAN), Tijani Gazali (SAN), Kenneth Mozia (SAN) and Audu Anuga (SAN) who represented the AGF, Bayelsa and Edo states urged the court to dismiss the suit for want of jurisdiction and for being incompetent.

Agabi, who also argued that necessary parties were not before the court, faulted the exclusion of the governor of the CBN as a party in the suit.

He noted that references were made to the CBN 32 times in the plaintiffs’ originating summons and supporting affidavit, while seven reliefs were sought against the apex bank, which was not made a party in the suit.

Agabi, who said his client filed a motion on notice seeking the dismissal of the Form 48 issued on the AGF and the Governor of CBN, added that an affidavit to show cause why Form 48 should be set aside has also been filed.

He argued that President Buhari did not flout the order of the court in his February 16 broadcast, insisting that it was a necessary intervention.

No Party Or Person Can Defeat President Tinubu In 2027, Atiku’s Son Declares

Published

on

Abba Atiku, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has joined the All Progressives Congress and declared that no political party can defeat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

Abba spoke in Yola on Monday after picking his APC membership registration card at Gwadabawa Ward in Yola North Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

He said he joined the party to contribute to what he described as the best economic and human reforms under the present administration.

“I want to make it very clear that nobody or any political party can stop President Bola Tinubu from returning to Aso Rock come 2027. Nigerians have seen his good work; he is not a tribalist, he don’t make appointments based on religion or region, but his decisions are purely on merit,” he said.

Abba said he was motivated to join the APC due to what he described as massive human and infrastructural development across the country under President Tinubu’s leadership.

“The president needs your support to continue with the good work. We should mobilise more people and beyond party affiliations to support our president,” he said.

The APC Zonal Vice Chairman, Adamawa Central, Alhaji Isa Bagalti, who handed over the membership card to Abba, said his defection had ended speculation that the APC could lose the 2027 election.

“It is now clear to people that there is no party in Nigeria or presidential candidate that can face our president at the poll come 2027,” he said.

Also speaking, a top APC chieftain in Adamawa State, Alhaji Jamil Yusuf, said President Tinubu has no rival ahead of the next presidential election.

He described other aspirants as wishful thinkers, saying they lacked the credentials to challenge the president.

“Majority of those saying that they are going to contest for the office of president see politics as a trade fair venue, where people sell and buy. I advise such people to invest their money in profitable ventures, because the office of the president is no longer for the highest bidder, but for competent people like President Tinubu,” he said.

Adamu Atiku, the first son of the former vice president, is a top member of the Peoples Democratic Party and a serving Commissioner for Works and Energy Development under Governor Ahmadu Fintiri’s administration.

Atiku Abubakar is a presidential aspirant on the platform of the African Democratic Congress, without any of his sons currently in the party with him.

BREAKING: Soludo Closes Onitsha Market For One Week Over Sit-At-Home Defiance

Published

on

Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has ordered the closure of the Onitsha Main Market for one week following traders’ failure to comply with the state government’s directive to disregard the Monday sit-at-home order.

The governor gave the directive on Monday during an on-site visit to the market, along with some of his aides and other government officials.

Soludo warned that the closure could be extended if traders fail to comply with the directive, adding that security agencies have sealed the market to enforce the order.

The governor described the development as the latest—and perhaps most drastic—salvo in a protracted struggle over control of economic life in the South-East on Monday.

Soludo said that despite repeated assurances of enhanced security and appeals to reclaim public spaces, many traders at the iconic market once again chose to keep their stalls locked.

According to him, their absence amounted to a quiet rebellion that nonetheless spoke volumes about the lingering climate of fear.

Soludo said, “The government cannot stand by while a few individuals willfully undermine public safety and disregard official directives meant to restore normalcy. This is plain economic sabotage.

“We are not going to allow this. The closure is a protective measure for law-abiding citizens.”

He, however, issued a stern warning that if the market fails to reopen after the one-week shutdown, it will be sealed for one month.

“You either decide that you are going to trade here or you go elsewhere. I am very serious about this,” the governor added.

The scene at the market on Monday was marked by tense enforcement, as a joint task force comprising police, army, and other security agencies was seen securing the perimeter.

As the gates remain locked this week, the standoff in Onitsha highlights the broader struggle to abolish the Monday sit-at-home.

When the market is scheduled to reopen next Monday, attention will be on the traders—whether they will return to their stalls following the state’s show of force, or whether empty aisles will deliver a different verdict.

The outcome may determine not just the fate of the market, but the rhythm of economic life in Anambra State on Mondays.

The state government had earlier directed traders and businesses to continue normal activities on Mondays as part of efforts to restore economic stability and end disruptions caused by recurring sit-at-home observances.

Meanwhile, there were reports on Saturday that the state government would begin pro-rata salary payments for workers across the state as part of efforts to end the Monday sit-at-home.

The State Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, disclosed this to journalists in Awka, noting that effective February 2026, civil servants’ salaries would be paid according to attendance on Mondays.

Mefor said the decision was reached during the end-of-tenure retreat of the Anambra State Executive Council held in Awka, which reviewed the administration’s activities over its concluding four-year tenure and outlined priorities for the new term beginning on March 17, 2026.

Leave Me Out of 2027 Running Mate Permutations, Tinubu Will Decide What’s Best —– Dogara

Published

on

Yakubu Dogara, former speaker of the House of Representatives, says decisions on power-sharing and religious balance should be guided by justice rather than fear or political pressure.

Dogara spoke on ‘Sunday Politics’, a Channels Television programme, amid speculation that Vice-President Kashim Shettima could be dropped as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate ahead of the 2027 general election.

The Christian-born politician added that governance should prioritise inclusiveness and fairness in building a nation that works for all.

Asked to respond to claims that his name was being mentioned as a potential running mate ahead of the president’s re-election bid, Dogara said, “Leave me out of this”.

“I would have sincerely pleaded with you to leave me out of this, but let me say something,” Dogara said.

“Whatever we are doing shouldn’t be because we are afraid of anybody breathing down our necks; it should be because it is the right thing to do.

“We are talking about running an inclusive government, bringing everybody in this country together, so that we can build a nation that works for all of us.”

Dogara said discussions around rotational presidency should also accommodate broader religious considerations.

“So, if we are talking about rotational presidency, there is nothing stopping us from having that discussion as well, because you are not just talking about northern Christians but about the Christian faith as a whole,” he said.

“If you have a Muslim, whether he comes from the north or the south, let it be that he is representing the Muslim community.

“And if you have a Christian, wherever he comes from, he represents the Christian faith. That way, you achieve religious balance.

“But honestly, if we’re going to do anything along those lines, it shouldn’t be that we are scared, but because, as men of it, we believe that God requires of us to do justice.

“And justice demands that we should balance things. I think that should be our concern.”

Speaking on the possibility of the APC fielding a Christian running mate in 2027, Dogara said the issue is being discussed.

“It’s a discussion, and I am aware that such discussions are already taking place,” he said.

“At the end of the day, whatever the president decides, nobody who is a serving president has ever lost the party primaries.

“So, we assume that the president will get the party’s ticket.

“Ultimately, whatever decisions he takes, I believe that it is up to him, but if we have an overwhelming majority of our people making a case that these things should be balanced, as a democrat, I sincerely believe that he will listen to it.

“Particularly for us northerners like you, I’ve always insisted that anybody who divides the north along religious lines has actually conquered the north.”
