Succession Tension In Ijebu Land As Alleged Smear Campaign Targets Omooba Abimbola Onabanjo

Published

on

Concerns are growing across Ijebu land following what community stakeholders describe as a calculated campaign of persecution against Omo Oba Abimbola Onabanjo, a prince widely regarded as one of the leading aspirants to the throne of the Awujale of Ijebu Land.

Investigations by Ogun Corner reveal that the situation escalated after false claims began circulating that Omo Oba Onabanjo was involved in an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) case. However, after careful checks and inquiries by Ogun Corner, it was discovered that the allegation is entirely untrue, as no such case exists against him with the anti-graft agency.

Despite the lack of evidence, sources say the unfounded claim was aggressively amplified, fueling a wider smear campaign. Observers note that the attacks soon extended beyond rumor-mongering to what has been described as a deliberate digital assault on the prince’s personal presence online.

According to reliable information available to Ogun Corner, all of Omo Oba Abimbola Onabanjo’s social media platforms came under coordinated attacks, a move seen by many as another leg of the broader effort to malign his person and diminish his public standing. The attacks reportedly succeeded in bringing down his social media pages. However, sources confirm that recovery efforts are currently underway to restore the accounts, which are believed to have been compromised by hackers.

Beyond the digital space, concern has also been raised over alleged attempts to intimidate traditional kingmakers. Community leaders allege that some interests, driven by political considerations, are exerting pressure on the custodians of tradition to prematurely announce a preferred candidate, a move widely criticized as an affront to established customs.

Reacting to the unfolding situation, prominent voices within Ijebu land have condemned the alleged actions, stressing that such conduct does not reflect the values or history of the Ijebu people.

“This is not our way,” said Chief Adekunle Adebayo, a respected elder in the community. “The Awujale stool is sacred. You do not desecrate it with falsehoods, intimidation, or desperation. Every qualified prince has the right to aspire.”

Echoing similar sentiments, Mrs. Funke Sodiya, a civic leader in Ijebu-Ode, urged restraint and patience.
“The process must be allowed to run its full course,” she said. “The kingmakers should not be intimidated under any circumstance.”

Traditional historians have also reminded the public of the established succession order. Alhaji Tunde Lawal, a cultural commentator, noted that tradition clearly points to the Fushegunwa Family as next in line to produce the Awujale, urging all parties to respect due process and avoid actions capable of destabilizing the community.

On his part, sources close to Omo Oba Abimbola Onabanjo told Ogun Corner that it has consistently been his position that no individual should be torn down in the name of ambition. The sources maintained that he firmly believes the collective interest of Ijebu land, Ogun State, and Nigeria must always take precedence over personal or political gains.

As tensions linger, calls are growing for calm, truthfulness, and strict adherence to tradition. Stakeholders warn that dragging the revered Awujale institution into controversy could have long-term consequences if care is not taken.

The Araba Touch: When Private Hearts Meet Public Health In Kwara By Babajide Fadoju

Published

on

Some forms of impact do not wait for ribbon-cutting ceremonies. They arrive quietly, long before policy documents are finalised and long before official photographs are framed. They arrive with stethoscopes, diagnostic kits, and a decision to act.

Last Saturday at Emir’s Gate, Oja Oba, the second edition of FlowFM’s free medical outreach was held. What took place was not merely a symbolic exercise but a carefully organised intervention.

The turnout was significant. Organisers had to suspend fresh registration at a point to ensure those already present received proper attention. According to figures provided by sources within the station, about 150 people were treated during the maiden edition. At the second outreach, that number rose to over 400 beneficiaries.

Beyond the statistics, however, the structure of the intervention stands out.

Medication was dispensed directly on site. Beneficiaries did not leave with prescriptions alone. Many received up to two months’ supply of their required medication. Patients were also formally registered, with follow-up plans put in place to monitor their conditions and ensure continuity of care.

In practical terms, this was not designed as a one-off event. It was structured to create a care pathway.

Observers have begun to refer to this approach as the Araba touch.

Quiet Philanthropy, Measurable Results

Araba Femi Sanni has earned a reputation for supporting initiatives without excessive publicity. The FlowFM outreach reflects a pattern of privately funded community interventions aimed at addressing immediate needs.

Community health workers often note that screening without treatment achieves limited results. Consultation without medication provides little relief. By combining medical checks, drug dispensation, and structured follow-up registration, the outreach moved beyond surface engagement.

At the same time, it exists within a broader healthcare landscape in Kwara State that is undergoing reform.

The administration of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has invested in upgrading facilities such as Sobi Specialist Hospital, General Hospital Omu-Aran, and General Hospital Ilorin to teaching hospital status. Recruitment of medical personnel, improvements in welfare structures, and facility upgrades are part of an ongoing institutional effort. Large-scale projects, including the Oluremi Tinubu Hospital, signal longer-term ambitions for advanced care delivery.

Yet public health systems evolve in phases. Infrastructure takes time to complete. Workforce expansion requires planning and funding cycles.

Private interventions like the FlowFM outreach operate in that interim space, responding to immediate needs while broader reforms continue to unfold.

Bridging Policy and People

What distinguishes the recent outreach is not only its scale but its method.

A media platform primarily known for broadcasting chose to mobilise its influence and resources toward healthcare access. Medical professionals were engaged. Supplies were secured. Registration systems were put in place. The outreach moved beyond awareness to action.

For many attendees, it was their first medical check-up in years. For others managing chronic conditions such as hypertension, the two-month medication supply provided a measure of stability.

Public health experts often emphasise continuity as the difference between temporary relief and meaningful intervention. The inclusion of follow-up planning suggests an understanding of that distinction.

Kwara’s progress will likely depend on that interplay. Government lays the structural foundations. Private actors extend reach. Communities participate.

The hundreds who gathered at Emir’s Gate may not follow the intricacies of policy frameworks or budgetary allocations. What they experienced was more immediate: access to doctors, access to medication, and a system that recorded their details for continued attention.

Impact, in this context, is not measured in rhetoric but in service delivered.

If turnout figures are any indication, public response has been strong. The second edition significantly exceeded the first in participation. Expectations for subsequent editions are already building.

In Kwara today, conversations about development increasingly include not only what the government is doing, but what citizens are contributing.

And in recent weeks, that contribution has taken a visible form at Oja Oba.

Governor Dapo Abiodun disclosed activities marking the institution’s 80th anniversary, noting that the proposed facility represents a deliberate investment in modern learning infrastructure designed to prepare students for a rapidly evolving, knowledge-driven global economy.

He explained that the digital classroom project complements ongoing smart-education initiatives within the school, which already features a functional resource centre and a state-of-the-art robotics laboratory established to nurture innovation, problem-solving skills, and digital competence among learners.

Abiodun further disclosed that the state government had upgraded the school’s science laboratories, equipping them with modern facilities and teaching tools to ensure safer and more effective practical learning experiences for students.

He added that renovation works had also been completed on both the male and female hostels to improve accommodation standards, enhance security, and promote the overall well-being of boarding students.

Describing Remo Secondary School as a symbol of enduring heritage, the governor said the anniversary celebration went beyond mere commemoration of years of existence, emphasising the institution’s long-standing role in shaping generations of leaders and professionals.

He praised members of the old students’ association for their unwavering support and contributions to the school’s development, stressing that their collective efforts demonstrate a shared commitment to sustaining its legacy of excellence.
