AFCON 2025 Records Highest Revenues In History —— CAF

Published

on

The Confederation of African Football has said that the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 has become the most successful commercial venture in the history of African football, recording more than a 90 per cent increase in revenues.

In a statement obtained from its website on Thursday, CAF said the achievement was driven by expanded sponsorship deals, broader media rights distribution, and entry into new markets, particularly in Asia.

The body stated, “The TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 is now undoubtedly the most successful commercial story in the history of African football as the commercial success of the competition has led to over 90% increase in the CAF revenues for the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025.”

The continental body attributed the surge to expanded partnerships, wider media rights distribution, and penetration into new territories.

It explained that the growth was “driven by a significant increase in the commercial partners of CAF, an increase in media rights distribution, and also CAF venturing into new markets, most notably the Far East, China, Japan, while also consolidating traditional markets.”

Providing details of the sponsorship trajectory, CAF noted, “The number of commercial partners increased from nine during the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Cameroon 2021 to 17 during the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Côte d’Ivoire 2023.”

It added that, “For the 2025 edition in Morocco, CAF has continued to attract more partners and now has 23 sponsors.”

CAF also stressed that the expansion reflected “both the attraction of new global brands and the retention of existing partners, for whom the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON has been an excellent return on investment.”

The football governing body said the commercial boom followed a deliberate data-driven strategy implemented after the 2023 finals in Côte d’Ivoire.

According to the statement, “The TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations has recorded unprecedented commercial growth between 2021 and 2025, driven by a deliberate, data-led strategy that has repositioned the competition as a truly global football property.”

CAF said audience research conducted after the last edition revealed untapped interest across several regions, adding that the findings “provided a clear roadmap for future commercial engagement.”

It stated that the insights informed the current cycle with “targeted focus placed on regions demonstrating high engagement levels, including China, Japan, Brazil, and key European markets.”

On its widening global footprint, CAF disclosed that its sponsor base now covered multiple continents, with partners from the United States, China, Germany, Japan, Morocco, Côte d’Ivoire, the United Kingdom, and Turkey, while the European Union had also joined as a sponsor.

The body listed long-standing collaborators such as TotalEnergies, Orange, Lonaci, 1xBet, Visa, Tecno, and Puma as continuing their association, with AGL, Danone, and Unilever renewing their commitments.

Big Win For Football Lovers As US Relaxes $15,000 Visa Bonds For World Cup Fans

The United States said Wednesday it would ease its system of demanding bond payments from visa applicants for certain fans seeking to come for the World Cup.

Under one of President Donald Trump’s many initiatives to crack down on migration, the United States has begun asking people from 50 developing countries to hand over anywhere from $5,000 to $15,000 for a US visa, refundable once they return home.

The State Department said it would waive the bonds for team members competing in World Cup matches in the United States, as well as for fans from competing countries who already have tickets and signed up for a priority system set up for visas.

“We remain committed to strengthening US national security priorities while facilitating legitimate travel for the upcoming World Cup tournament,” said Mora Namdar, the assistant secretary of state for consular affairs.

She said the Trump administration wanted to organize the “biggest and best FIFA World Cup in history.”

“Today’s announcement from the US State Department further demonstrates our ongoing collaboration with the US Government and the White House Task Force for the FIFA World Cup to deliver a successful, record-breaking, and unforgettable global event,” a FIFA spokesperson said in a statement.

Five countries that qualified for the World Cup are among those whose nationals are required to pay visa bonds: Algeria, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, Senegal, and Tunisia.

At least two other countries that have qualified for the soccer showcase have seen nearly total bans on entry into the United States under Trump: Haiti, the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, and Iran, which the United States and Israel attacked on February 28.

The Trump administration has also sharply expanded scrutiny for visitors from friendly Western countries, requiring them to provide access for the US government to look through their social media postings.

A study by the Mendoza Law Firm found that Haiti could play its matches with virtually no fans traveling from the country due to the restrictions.

It said that in the five qualifying countries affected by the visa bonds, $15,000 is equivalent to an average of three years of income.

The World Cup, which kicks off June 11, is being co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Senegal Submits Appeal To CAS Against CAF’s AFCON Decision

Published

The Senegalese FA has finally filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the CAF’s decision to strip the country of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title.

CAS confirmed that the appeal was registered on Wednesday.

On March 17, the CAF Appeals Board’s verdict stripped Senegal of the 2025 AFCON title and named Morocco the champions.

The ruling said Senegal had breached Articles 82 and 84 of the AFCON regulations after several of its players walked off the pitch to their dressing room in protest of a referee’s decision.

CAS said the Senegalese FA seeks to overturn the Appeals Board’s verdict and have the Teranga Lions declared champions of Africa.

The apex court for sporting disputes said Senegal also “requests an immediate suspension of the time limit to submit an appeal brief until the CAF decision is notified with full grounds”.

“A CAS Arbitral Panel will be appointed to consider this matter. Following this, a procedural calendar will be established. In accordance with CAS procedural rules, an Appellant has twenty days to file an appeal brief with legal arguments, and the Respondents then have a further twenty days to submit an answer containing a statement of defence,” the statement reads.

“At this early stage of proceedings and considering the FSF request to suspend deadlines, it is not possible to anticipate a procedural timeline and to indicate when a hearing will be scheduled.”

CAS said it will ensure that the “arbitration proceedings are conducted as swiftly as possible, while respecting the right of all parties to a fair hearing”.
