An Ikeja High Court, Lagos yesterday heard how a 22-year-old female undergraduate student (name withheld) of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), was infected with a sexually transmitted disease (STD) after being raped by two brothers on her way to the school campus. A doctor from the Mirabel Centre, Dr. Alagbe Oyetunji, told the court that the victim was examined and discovered to have contracted an STD, identified as staphylococcus.

T he victim, who identified her attackers as Bright Nwachukwu (31) and Chijindu Nwachukwu (23), said the incident occurred on February 16, 2017 at No 4, Odusanya Street in Ijaiye Ojokoro, a suburb of Lagos. However, while being led in evidence by the prosecuting officer, Mrs. C. K. Carena, the doctor recalled that upon medical examination, it was discovered that the victim had a copious amount of odorous vaginal discharge.

He said: “The discharge was examined to be caused by an infectious STD called staphylococcus. “On close examination an injury was discovered at the entrance of the urethra which made it reddish.”

Meanwhile, the two brothers are both standing trial before Justice Josephine Oyefeso on a two-count charge of rape and obtaining money by false pretence, brought against them by the Lagos State government.

According to the testimony of the victim, a graduate of the Department of Biology Education, she was on her way to the campus when one of the brothers approached her and asked for directions to a certain place in Yaba, but she replied that the address was unknown to her.

She said: “Bright walked up to me and asked for an address at Yaba but I told him that I didn’t know the place. He left and came back again to tell me that I have a spiritual problem. And that he knew someone who could help free me from the spiritual attacks I was facing. “I didn’t know how I boarded a bus with them and we proceeded to Ijaiye. When we got there, they took me to a warehouse and later showed me liquid substance which one of them said was a chemical for doubling money.

“They asked me how much I had on me and I told them that I had only a few change and my ATM. Hours later, another man who the brothers referred to as ‘pastor’ later joined us in the warehouse.

They told me that the pastor was there to pray for me. “One of the brothers and the pastor then left with my ATM card to the bank to withdraw my money.

While I waited for them, I got a debit alert of N19,000 from my account. “While I waited for their return, I was left alone with Bright to guard me in case I attempted to escape. “Bright then demanded to have sex with me.

He said that he wanted to have sex with me in order to free me from the spiritual problems I was going through. “I became so scared and I started crying and pleaded with him that I didn’t want to die. Bright then told me that the only option to avoid death was to have sex with him.

I started begging him again not to have sex with me, but he eventually had his way. “When Chijindu came from where he had gone to withdraw the N19,000 that I had in my bank account, he ordered me to delete the alert message sent by my bank. He also came back with another man, who claimed to be a pastor. “He brought in a bucket of water and after looking through it, he said my mother had some money in her drawer and I should go home and bring it, while he instructed me not to talk to anyone until I accomplished the mission.”

The victim said she got glimpse of a signpost reading “Toluwalase” and put it to heart. She added: “When I got home, I met my mother and my brother who later said I was acting strange and restless. “That was when it dawned on me that I had been scammed. I began crying and later told my mother what happened to me. “My mother thereafter took me to Area ‘G’ Police Station at Ogba, where the matter was reported.” Oyefeso adjourned the matter till February 19, 2018 for continuation of trial.
