Kogi-Assembly

The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, on Thursday, reinstated the impeached Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Hon. Momoh Jimoh Lawal.

In a judgment delivered by Justice Nnamdi Dimgba, the court equally restored the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Aliyu Akuh and seven other Principal Officers of the Kogi State House of Assembly, saying the process that led to their purported impeachment on February 16, 2016, was unconstitutional and illegal.

It said their removal was not in line with provisions of sections 90, 91, 92 (2) (c), 95 (1) & (2) and 96(1) & (2) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

Consequently, the court voided the purported election of Hon. Umar Imam as the Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, as well as the emergency of four others- Friday Sani; Lawal A.T. Ahmed; Bello Abdullahi and John Abah as principal officers of the House.

Aside the Speaker and his Deputy, others the court also reinstated were Hon. Kolawole Mathew, Osiyi Godwin, Sunday Shigaba, Ndako Idris, Oluwatoyin Lawal, Musa Jimoh and Victor Omofaye.

Specifically, the court held that “The continued sitting and conduct of the affairs of the Kogi State House of Assembly by the 1st – 5th defendants after the purported removal of the 1st plaintiff and other principal officers of the House and purported installation of themselves as principal officers of the Kogi State House of Assembly on the 16th day of February, 2016, is illegal having regard to section 96(1) of the Constitution and Rule 5(1)”.

Besides, it restrained the Inspector General of Police, Director General of the State Security Service, Commandant of the National Security and Civil Defence Corps, who were 7th to 8th defendants in the suit, “from further barricading the complex of the House of Assembly and preventing the plaintiffs from accessing the hallowed chambers if the Kogi State House of Assembly to conduct their legal and legitimate duties as legislators validly elected to represent their various constituencies”.

The court however declined to declare that the security agencies, by their actions, aided and abetted the five lawmakers to carry out the purported impeachment as well as subsequent withdrawal of the Speaker’s vehicles (official and personal) and withdrawal of security operatives attached to the embattled Speaker. It also refused to award general damages in the sum of N500million.

The judgement followed a suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/184/16, which the removed Speaker, his Deputy, seven other lawmakers and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, lodged before the court through their lawyer, Mr. Emeka Etiaba, SAN.

Cited as 1st to 5th defendants in the matter were the five lawmakers that effected the purported impeachment, the aforementioned security agencies and the Kogi State House of Assembly.

The plaintiffs prayed the court to determine whether in view of provisions of the 1999 Constitution and Rules 3(1) & (2) of the Standing Rules of Kogi State House of Assembly dated February 15, 2016, their removal was not unconstitutional, illegal, null and void.

Hon. Abdulganiu Vinod Obasa Empowers Agege Youths with Solar Energy Skills, Drives Grassroots Development

The Chairman of Agege Local Government, Hon. Abdulganiu Vinod Obasa, has reaffirmed his commitment to youth empowerment and sustainable development with the commencement of a Solar Electrification Training and Renewable Energy Value Chain Development Programme in Agege.

The forward-looking programme started today and will run until Friday, targeting the empowerment of young people with practical, market-driven skills in renewable energy—an increasingly critical sector amid Nigeria’s power challenges and the global shift toward clean energy solutions.

The first batch of 25 participants is currently undergoing intensive training that blends classroom instruction with hands-on practical sessions. The curriculum covers solar power fundamentals, panel installation, basic system maintenance, safety procedures, and an introduction to the renewable energy value chain.

Facilitators are equipping participants with real-life, employable skills aimed at preparing them for self-employment, entrepreneurship, and job opportunities within the renewable energy ecosystem.

In a strong show of leadership involvement, Hon. Abdulganiu Vinod Obasa will personally present certificates to all participants at the end of the programme on Friday.

The certification not only validates the skills acquired by the trainees but also enhances their employability and credibility within the energy sector.

Community stakeholders have described the Chairman’s direct participation as motivating, noting that it reinforces the administration’s seriousness about human capital development at the grassroots.

To ensure continuity and broader impact, organisers confirmed that a second batch of trainees will commence from February 16 to February 20. This phased rollout underscores the local government’s long-term vision to build a pool of skilled youths capable of meeting local energy needs and contributing meaningfully to economic growth.

Residents and observers have commended the Agege Local Government Chairman for prioritising skills acquisition over short-term palliatives, describing the initiative as a sustainable solution to youth unemployment and economic vulnerability.

By investing in renewable energy training, the Obasa-led administration is positioning Agege youths to become solution providers capable of supporting households, small businesses, and institutions with clean and reliable power alternatives.

With the solar training programme now underway and more batches scheduled, Hon. Abdulganiu Vinod Obasa continues to demonstrate people-oriented leadership that translates policy into tangible benefits. The initiative stands as a testament to an administration focused on empowerment, innovation, and sustainable development laying a solid foundation for a more resilient and economically active Agege community.

As the first batch progresses toward certification and the second batch prepares to begin, the programme is already being hailed as a model for grassroots-driven development powered by vision, inclusion, and practical action.

JUST IN: Impeachment of Fubara, Deputy’ll Continue ——- Rivers Lawmakers

Published

on

Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have insisted that the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, will continue, describing it as the only solution to the political crisis in the state.

The lawmakers made this known on Friday while briefing journalists, after the Assembly failed to reconvene on Thursday as scheduled.

Taking turns to address the media, the legislators maintained that the impeachment proceedings were constitutional and in line with their legislative responsibilities.

They dismissed criticisms of the process, insisting that the Assembly was acting within the provisions of the law to address what they described as a political impasse in Rivers State.

The briefing came a day after the Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, failed to resume plenary on Thursday, exactly one week after adjourning its last sitting.

The House had, at its sitting last week, initiated impeachment proceedings against Fubara and his deputy over alleged gross misconduct.

The allegations included the demolition of the Assembly complex and spending public funds without legislative approval.

However, the impeachment move has faced political pushback, with four lawmakers between Monday and Wednesday formally withdrawing from the process and calling for an amicable resolution of the crisis.

Despite expectations that the Assembly would reconvene on Thursday, there was no indication that plenary held, fuelling speculation about internal divisions within the House.

The lawmakers, however, said on Friday that the impeachment process remained on course.

Obasa Hosts Constituents, Party Leaders, Urges Continuous Grassroots Engagement, Increased Participation in APC E-Registration

As part of efforts to encourage and galvanise participation in the ongoing All Progressives Congress (APC) electronic membership registration (e-registration) exercise, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa hosted constituents and party executives in his constituency office in Agege on Wednesday, January 14.

Speaker Obasa, the member representing Agege Constituency 1 since 2003, praised constituents for their support, loyalty, and active involvement in the exercise, adding that their enthusiasm for the party and all its activities is critical for its current success and longevity.

The e-registration exercise, he said, was crucial to strengthening the party and ensuring its cohesion and credibility. “We must register now and encourage more people to do so because it empowers us to build a more inclusive and formidable platform ahead of future elections.

Furthermore, the Speaker passionately urged councillors and other elected officials to maintain regular engagement with Community Development Associations (CDA), landlord associations, religious leaders, market women, and trade associations, which he described as a vital channel for gathering information on community needs and government interventions.

Reputed for his firm belief in accessible governance and continuous engagement with the people, Speaker Obasa said, “We shouldn’t wait until election time before seeing our elected officials. Constant engagement will help us to know where the shoe pinches the people, and then we will be able to provide responsive leadership.”

He added, “Continuous interactions and engagements will foster harmonious coexistence, identify pressing issues early, and build mutual trust, creating an environment where people feel heard, valued, and involved in decision-making.” The Speaker also advised councillors to continuously engage party leaders and ward executives for their political growth.

Addressing his excited supporters, the Speaker reaffirmed his resolve to sustain these engagements, saying, “Together, we will keep building a stronger and more united APC.”
