President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the immediate return of Nigeria to international basketball competitions.

Ismaila Abubakar, the Permanent Secretary, of the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, made the announcement on Thursday at a press briefing in Abuja.

According to him, the approval was granted following a letter of appeal dated June 17, 2022, which was signed by Musa Kida, leader of the Nigeria Basketball Federation board, and addressed to the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare.

Abubakar said, “The letter appealed to the Minister to use his good offices to approach President Buhari for the reversal of the 2-year withdrawal of Nigeria from international basketball competitions.

“The Appeal letter also critically gave some key undertakings: to immediately set in motion the process of status review or constitutional amendments from stakeholders as collated by the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, to set up a high-powered team to reconcile all contending parties in the basketball family at home and abroad, and a commitment to work with the Ministry in the governance and development of basketball among other things.

“Flowing from the above and upon a review, the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development approached and placed these developments before President Muhammadu Buhari being one that is committed to youth development and desirous of ensuring that they are availed of all opportunities in sports and other endeavors considered the appeal and in the overriding spirit of national interest, love for our youth, and in order to avoid sending basket development into a long period of suspension when NBBF has now committed to the resolution of the issues which precipitated the withdrawal in the first place has approved the return of Nigeria to international basketball immediately.”

Furthermore, Abubakar said despite the approval, the stakeholders were warned to ensure that the country’s laws are not subjugated to any other law.

“Failure to do this, as with any constitutionally bound sovereign nation, will attract sanctions. There was first a country before any organization or federation that bears the Nigerian name, colors, and flag us representing Nigeria.

“Secondly, that all those that lead government organizations and in this case our federations, hold such positions in trust for the Government and people of Nigeria under the direct supervision of the Minister of Youth and Sports,” he said.

Portable’s Aide Knocks Bike Rider Dead With Singer’s Car

The Ayano Ilogbo area of Ogun State was sent into mourning when a Range Rover, belonging to a fast-rising Nigerian singer, Portable, hit a bike rider.

The driver of the car, who is one of Portable’s associates, was running errands when the sad event happened.

Portable’s manager, who confirmed the incident via a telephone chat, noted that the victim died after he was rushed to the hospital.

His manager, named Theresa, told our correspondent, “I’ll be very fast with you because I’m very busy. I was the one that sent one of his boys to go and buy something for me.

“On their way going, maybe the bike man thought that Portable was the one driving or they wanted to collect money or whatever, but the man drove to the vehicle. That was how they hit the man.

“They called me. I left where I was with Portable. We went there. The guy that drove the car rushed the man to the hospital. I got to the hospital and transferred N25,000 to them.

“They said N20,000 was for treatment while N5,000 was for X-ray.”

She noted that when she got to the hospital, the bike rider was complaining about pains in his back, noting that his two female passengers were unhurt.

The manager continued, “When I left the hospital, I gave them another N8,000 to take a cab to where they were going to conduct the X-ray. Immediately after I left there, I reported to the Divisional Police Officer and the Commissioner of Police.

“I called DPO Sango and DPO Ifo to explain what happened. After 10 minutes, they called me back from the hospital that the man had given up.

“When I got the call, I had to call the boy that was in the scenario to go to the station to report himself. He is at the station as I’m talking to you like this.”

When our correspondent reached out to the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, he stated that the DPO had not briefed him on the matter, stating that he would find out.

“The DPO there has not sent the report to me. So I’ll find out,” Oyeyemi said.

BOXING: Tyson Fury Demands £500m To Fight Anthony Joshua

Published

Tyson Fury, also known as The Gypsy King, has revealed that it will take a “£500m deal” for him to return to professional boxing.

Tyson, 33, insisted he was hanging up his gloves after knocking out Dillian Whyte at Wembley in April.

The WBC champ has left fans baffled having retired, then saying he will return for a £200m bout with Anthony Joshua, then making a U-turn on that to suggest he would only be interested in exhibition events.

He has now claimed he would take on his fellow Brit – for the audacious sum of £500m.

He revealed the figure in an interview with talkSPORT after initially raising hopes of a Battle of Britain bout when speaking to Frank Warren’s Queensbury Promotions on Tuesday.

In a confusing series of apparent U-turns, Fury appeared on Good Morning Britain today to state he IS retired and will only enter the ring for “Hollywood style entertainment”.

And he has now muddied the waters further, telling talkSPORT, “I’m 100 percent retired. Nothing’s changed. Everyone’s making all these assumptions that I’m coming back, I’ve got these dates.

“I’m coming back for a few exhibition fights. Playtime, showtime, entertainment.

“I don’t know who the exhibition is against. I thought it was against an old timer or The Rock or someone so maybe it will generate £200m on my end.

“Even £200m doesn’t even tempt me. I’d probably want half a billion to come out of retirement.

“If it’s half a billion I won’t say no (to Joshua).

“What he’s got to do is come out with half a billion and then the Gypsy King will solve all his problems. Because if AJ gets beat again by Usyk then there will be only one man to redeem this great nation of the United Kingdom and he goes by the name of Tyson Fury.

“I can solve all the problems, the embarrassment, all that stuff that’s going to happen – one call, but it’s going to cost £500m.”
