The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has boasted that his party – the Peoples Democratic Party – will use the All Progressives Congress and former governor Segun Oni or anyone presented as the APC candidate in the 2018 governorship election to set another record.

The governor defeated former governor Kayode Fayemi of the APC in all the 16 local governments in the state in the 2014 governorship election.

Fayose expressed confidence that 2018 would mark the third time he and his party would defeat the opposition and its candidate in governorship elections in the state.

The governor stated this in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Idowu Adelusi, in Ado-Ekiti on Sunday, while reacting to comments made by Oni during his declaration of intent to contest the 2018 poll.

Oni had said that Fayose and the PDP were common enemies that he and the APC must tackle during the poll.

While advising Oni to keep his gunpowder dry until he is able to secure the APC’s ticket, Fayose noted that the APC and its candidate would be no match for the PDP and its candidate.

He said, “We defeated them (Alliance for Democracy) in 2003 and recorded a landslide victory against them (APC) in 2014 when their candidate could not even win his local government.

“The 2014 victory was very remarkable because Oni was part of a gang up of three former governors against me and my party and we won convincingly.

“Oni tried unsuccessfully to rubbish my administration’s giant strides in the state during my first tenure and the current one. It was during my first term that we dualised all the roads leading to Ado-Ekiti, the state capital. We repositioned education and improved on the state’s performance in public examinations. We are number one in NECO and among the top states in WAEC examinations.

“Now, we are not only dualising roads across 11 local government areas, we have extended the Ado-Ikere Road dualisation deep into Ikere town. Because the APC and its leaders in Ekiti lack foresight, they can never ever see anything good in the flyover, new Ojaba Market, new high court complex, new Governor’s Office and other numerous projects we are executing.

“They are simply dumbfounded that in spite of the austere times we are in, our administration has been able to forge ahead with these projects. It is only a leadership that is focused and knows its onions that can place the welfare of majority of people over and above the welfare of minority.”

Fayose said Oni and his party should be reminded that it was the APC-led administration of 2010 to 2014 that plunged the state into financial crisis by leaving workers’ entitlements unpaid and borrowing to finance projects it never executed.

The Rivers State House of Assembly has reconvened after the expiration of a six-month emergency rule declared in the state by President Bola Tinubu.

Tinubu lifted the emergency rule on September 17, directing Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and members of the assembly to resume their official duties on September 18.

Thursday’s plenary session was presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule and held at the conference hall within the assembly quarters in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

Since the assembly chamber at the Moscow Road complex was razed and later demolished by the state government, lawmakers have been using the conference hall as their temporary chamber.

The reconstruction of the assembly complex, which was overseen by the outgone sole administrator, Ibok-Ete Ibas, could not be completed before his exit.

On March 18, Tinubu had declared emergency rule in Rivers State following a protracted political crisis triggered by the rift between Governor Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

Lagos Lawmakers Call For Financial Autonomy For Local Government Legislative Arm

Published

on

Members of the Lagos State Assembly have called for financial autonomy for the legislative arms of the Local Governments (LGs) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) throughout the state.

The call was made at Plenary session on Tuesday, September 16, presided over by the Speaker, Rt Hon Mudashiru Obasa.

The motion, titled “Call for Financial Independence for the Legislative Arms of Local Government Areas and LCDAs in Lagos,” was introduced by Hon. Sanni Babatunde, the Chairman of the Committee on Local Government Administration, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development.

Hon. Babatunde underscored that the legislative arm at the local level plays a crucial role in Nigeria’s democratic framework, bearing constitutional responsibilities for law-making, oversight, and constituency representation.

Contributing to the discussion, Hon. Obafemi Saheed highlighted that the 1999 Constitution emphasizes the separation of powers, asserting that granting autonomy at the local level would enhance representation, oversight, and independence, aligning it with practices at the state and federal levels. He argued that such measures would foster good governance at the grassroots.

Hon. Temitope Adewale, OON, who supported the motion, stressed that councilors perform functions comparable to those of state legislators. He expressed concern that many council leaders often face undue influence from local government chairpersons due to their financial reliance. He proposed that training for local government legislative leaders should involve cooperation between the Ministry of Local Government and the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Further insights were shared by Hon. Bonu Solomon, who commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for providing financial autonomy to local governments through direct allocations from the federation account, which has reportedly improved their operational efficiency. He insisted that similar financial independence should also be granted to local legislative bodies.

Hon. Aro Moshood added that empowering local government legislatures is essential for effective governance, suggesting that lawmakers should actively observe local legislative sessions to understand the issues faced by councilors without autonomy.

The lawmakers decided to urge Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to instruct the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development to formulate a strategy for the independent financing of Legislative Councils within Lagos State.

Speaker Obasa echoed the importance of financial independence for councilors to effectively perform their oversight roles. He noted the increased allocations to local governments and emphasized the need to empower grassroots legislatures to maintain proper checks and balances for the benefit of the citizens.

The House resolved to instruct the Commissioner of the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development to prioritize ongoing training and capacity-building programs for councilors in financial management, budgeting, and legislative practices. They also urged the Ministry to pursue the enactment of a self-accounting law that would secure financial autonomy for the legislative arms in all local governments and LCDAs.
