Two students of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State – Olabiyi Emmanuel and Olokun Babatunde Alex – have been confirmed dead by the Students Union Government of the school.
According to a statement by the SUG on Saturday, the students, both in 300 Level, were of the Project Management Technology Department and Agricultural and Environmental Engineering Department.
Emmanuel and Alex were said to have gone alongside other students for their Entrepreneurship Training at the laboratory for Fishery and Aquaculture, which is located at the back of Obakekere Hall.
After the training, four of them decided to take a selfie on the canoe parked at the venue.
It was in the process that the canoe capsized, leading to the death of two of them.
The other two swam to safety.
In the statement by Fowode Ayomide and Olaseinde Adeyinka, Public Relations Officer and President respectively of the FUT SUG, the student body prayed for the repose of the souls of the dead.
