The President Must Speak To Nigerians by Fidelis Duker

Published

on

President Tinubu should directly address the nation amidst rising tensions ahead of the planned protest on August 1st, 2024, led by young Nigerians voicing their concerns about the harsh economic conditions. There is a growing worry about the perception of the president as disconnected and lacking solutions to national challenges. Senator Ali Ndume recently accused the president of being controlled by a few individuals in the villa, a narrative the president should not ignore.

Although the president has engaged with important stakeholders like traditional and religious leaders, some of his aides and security personnel have been pushing divisive narratives, blaming opposition parties and threatening protesters, which undermines democracy. It is crucial for the president to unite all Nigerians, both protesters and those against them, to prevent violence. Peaceful protests should be allowed, but violent actions condemned.

To avert unrest, the president must communicate directly with the people, explaining the reasons behind policies like fuel subsidy removal and floating the foreign exchange market, while providing clear timelines for expected outcomes. The president’s low approval rating from the 2023 elections highlights the need for him to rebuild trust with the populace, making the upcoming protest a crucial moment for him to regain confidence.

Sending individuals like Bayo Onanuga to communicate with Nigerians during times of tension is counterproductive and detrimental to the principles of effective communication. Amid rising insecurity, hunger, and anger, exacerbating the existing tension through such means is unwise. It is crucial to communicate government intentions and appeals for patience in a way that does not further agitate an already volatile situation.

It is also essential to address the decentralized nature of the leadership within the END BAD GOVERNANCE movement. Movements without clear leadership structures often descend into chaos and violence, as seen during the ENDSARS protests. Unlike the 2012 OCCUPY Nigeria demonstrations, where leadership was identifiable, the absence of a clear leadership face in the current protests raises concerns. The group must either establish a visible leadership or discern when to cease actions, considering the potential risks of continuing without a structured approach.

Security agencies have a vital role in safeguarding lives and properties, encompassing the protection of both protesters and those opposing the demonstrations. All lives and properties must be safeguarded as security personnel engage with demonstrators, adhering to established protocols and procedures. It is imperative to ensure the safety of all individuals involved while upholding the principles of lawful engagement.

It is important to ensure that communication efforts during periods of tension are strategic and sensitive to the prevailing circumstances. Addressing issues with clarity, empathy, and a commitment to de-escalation is crucial in promoting understanding and peaceful resolution. Additionally, fostering open dialogue and actively listening to the concerns of all stakeholders can help mitigate conflicts and facilitate constructive engagement.

Building trust with the public requires a comprehensive approach. This includes implementing a strict plan to reduce the luxurious lifestyle of the political elite, restructuring the economy for sustainability, increasing transparency in governance, ensuring accountability for criminal activities, halting the practice of appointing politicians with corruption allegations, reshuffling the cabinet to address the issue of underperforming ministers (over 85%), and establishing more effective communication channels between the government and the citizens.

These evidence-based initiatives are essential to demonstrate a commitment to serving the interests of the populace and fostering a more accountable and responsive government.

In conclusion, effective communication and leadership structures are vital in navigating complex situations, such as the current tensions in Nigeria. By prioritizing transparency, dialogue, and inclusivity, stakeholders can work towards building trust, addressing grievances, and fostering a peaceful resolution to the challenges at hand. Mr President MUST address Nigerians in a nationwide broadcast.

An explosion occurred at the Tony Okocha-led secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, located along Aba Road, Port Harcourt, on Saturday, October 5, 2024, during the local government election.

The explosion damaged the gate and doors of the secretariat, along with other property. According to Tony Okocha, Chairman of the APC faction in Rivers State, “About 3:20am some gun-trotting young men with their explosives and all that, came here and dropped the first explosive,” but when it did not detonate, “they came back the second time to burn the structure – look at the security house is gone.”

Okocha alleged that the attack was politically motivated, accusing Governor Siminalayi Fubara of responsibility. He stated, “It was deliberate to see how they can annihilate us, it is deliberate to see how they can embarrass us, it is deliberate to see how they can decimate us.”

Despite the incident, accreditation and voting have commenced in several polling centres around Port Harcourt City.
