Emerging reports suggest that Nigeria’s second republic vice president, Dr Alex Ekwueme, has collapsed and is currently in hospital.

The 85-year old Ekwueme is said to be at the Intensive Care Unit of Memfys Hospital for Neurosurgery in Enugu state.

There are reports of plans to fly him abroad for treatment.

A report by The Punch indicates that second republic vice president collapsed in his home on Saturday, October 28.

According to the report, Ekwueme collapsed around 2am at his residence in Independence Layout, Enugu and has since been rushed to Memfys Hospital for Neurosurgery in the state.

The development comes barely 10 days (October 21) after he celebrated his 85th birthday.

President Buhari recently congratulated Dr Ekwueme on his 85th birthday.

President Muhammmadu Buhari led eminent Nigerians to congratulate the former vice president as he marked his 85th birthday.

In a statement sent to journalists by his spokesman, Femi Adesina, President Buhari said Ekwueme’s life journey had been a narrative of immeasurable grace, courage and candour.

Family members quoted in the report said that the former vice president went into coma soon after he collapsed.

“He was trying to get something from the table when he suddenly collapsed and immediately someone raised the alarm, we proceeded to revive him while cautious enough not to attract neighbours.

“When it became obvious that he had lapsed into coma, we rushed him to a hospital (unnamed) in GRA (Government Reserved Area), but we were referred to Memphys Hospital by medical consultants who had critically examined his condition,” an unnamed source said.
