FirstBank, West Africa’s premier financial institution and the leading financial inclusion service provider, has announced its strategic sponsorship of the second edition of ChessMasters, Africa’s largest school chess tournament. The announcement was made at the official press conference of the tournament held on 16 March 2026 at Eko Hotels and Suites, Lagos.

ChessMasters is an annual chess tournament designed to equip the next generation with critical thinking, problem-solving, and leadership skills. The competition targets children in primary school aged between 6 and 11 years old. Organised by Eko Hotels and Suites & KEY Academy, ChessMasters was created to provide thousands of children across Nigeria with opportunities to develop modern educational skills, bringing schools together on a national stage.

Speaking at the press conference, Olayinka Ijabiyi, Acting Group Head, Marketing & Corporate Communications at FirstBank, said, “Our sponsorship of ChessMasters 2026 reflects our commitment to building talents and communities, driving inclusion, and deepening engagement through our First@Sports initiative, a platform that celebrates talent and promotes social impact through sports. The second edition of ChessMasters will be held on Saturday, 2 May 2026, at Eko Hotels and Suites, Lagos. The competition is open to 150 schools across Lagos, with over 700 students expected to participate and vie for a total prize pool of N10 million.

FirstBank’s involvement in the 2026 edition of the tournament reinforces ChessMasters’ potential to serve as a launchpad for African children, leveraging chess as a tool for education, empowerment, and leadership development.

The Senegalese FA has finally filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the CAF’s decision to strip the country of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title.

CAS confirmed that the appeal was registered on Wednesday.

On March 17, the CAF Appeals Board’s verdict stripped Senegal of the 2025 AFCON title and named Morocco the champions.

The ruling said Senegal had breached Articles 82 and 84 of the AFCON regulations after several of its players walked off the pitch to their dressing room in protest of a referee’s decision.

CAS said the Senegalese FA seeks to overturn the Appeals Board’s verdict and have the Teranga Lions declared champions of Africa.

The apex court for sporting disputes said Senegal also “requests an immediate suspension of the time limit to submit an appeal brief until the CAF decision is notified with full grounds”.

“A CAS Arbitral Panel will be appointed to consider this matter. Following this, a procedural calendar will be established. In accordance with CAS procedural rules, an Appellant has twenty days to file an appeal brief with legal arguments, and the Respondents then have a further twenty days to submit an answer containing a statement of defence,” the statement reads.

“At this early stage of proceedings and considering the FSF request to suspend deadlines, it is not possible to anticipate a procedural timeline and to indicate when a hearing will be scheduled.”

CAS said it will ensure that the “arbitration proceedings are conducted as swiftly as possible, while respecting the right of all parties to a fair hearing”.

FIFA on Wednesday confirmed the final line-up for the inter-confederation play-off tournament, naming DR Congo as Africa’s representative.

The development by the footballing body has dashed Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In an accreditation notice circulated to journalists ahead of the competition, FIFA detailed the tournament format and listed the six participating nations.

DR Congo’s inclusion leaves no room for Nigeria, whose football federation had challenged the result of their defeat in the CAF play-offs in November 2025.

The Nigeria Football Federation lodged a formal protest, alleging that DR Congo fielded ineligible players during the decisive tie, which ended 1-1 and went to penalties, where Nigeria lost.

The appeal sought to overturn the result and secure the Super Eagles’ place in the inter-continental play-offs.
