- Calls for action on herder-farmer clashes
Muhammad Sanusi II, the former Emir of Kano, has expressed his admiration for President Tinubu’s decisive action in resolving long-standing issues surrounding fuel subsidy and multiple exchange rate regimes.
Sanusi, who met with the president recently, commended Tinubu for taking the necessary steps to stabilize the Nigerian economy.
During a press briefing with State House correspondents, Sanusi said: “The first reason for my visit was to formally congratulate him, but also because I wear multiple hats, including that of an economist. I wanted to thank him for his efforts in putting the economy back on track.
“Many of the issues we have been discussing, such as the hemorrhaging fiscal impact of fuel subsidy and the existence of multiple exchange rates, are matters I have personally been advocating for a long time. I am pleased that on his very first day, he has addressed these issues, and the market’s response has been positive.”
Sanusi emphasized the importance of providing feedback to the government when they make the right decisions, not just when they make mistakes.
He commended President Tinubu for starting on a strong footing and called for support and encouragement of the policies being pursued to sustain the positive trajectory of the economy.
Regarding another matter, Sanusi revealed that he had received assurances from Tinubu regarding the investigation into the Nigerian Air Force raid that resulted in the tragic death of at least 37 herders in Nasarawa State earlier this year.
Sanusi expressed his concern about the ongoing clashes between herders and farmers.
“I raised the issue of herdsmen-farmer clashes, which is a concern shared by President Tinubu. We discussed steps that need to be taken to address these issues. Additionally, I appealed to him regarding the case of the 37 herders who lost their lives in the Airforce bombing in Nasarawa State.
“We had previously written a letter to President Buhari about this matter, and we recently sent a reminder because we did not want it to be forgotten. President Tinubu has requested that I forward him the letter, and I am confident that he will give it due consideration,” he added.
