Citizens of Minna, the capital of Niger State, on Monday, blocked main thoroughfares in the city as a form of protest over the high cost of living there.

Women and young people were among the demonstrators, and they were heard chanting protest songs as police officers and other security personnel watched.

The demonstrators claimed that the growing cost of food and the government’s inadequate response to the crisis compelled them to block important routes in the hopes that the government would take notice of their pleas.

The Deputy Governor of Niger State, Yakubu Garba, while addressing the protesters, said the government is aware of the pain and hardship families are faced with at this time.

He said the government is working towards reducing the cost of living and consequences of the petrol subsidy removal.
