Mustapha Mohammed, the police commissioner in Rivers, stated that an investigation team has been set up to probe the violence at some LGA secretariats in the state.
On Wednesday, Mohammed visited several LGA secretariats, including Port Harcourt, Obio/Akpor, Ikwerre, Emohua, and Eleme, to assess the damage.
Recall that on Monday, hoodlums set fire to parts of three LGA secretariats — Emohua, Eleme, and Ikwerre — in an attempt to stop elected officials from resuming their duties. Five people were reportedly killed during the violence.
During the visit, Mohammed assured that the command is taking action, stating, “We are conducting an on-the-spot assessment of the situation on the ground so far and what has happened in these areas.”
He also announced that a “high-powered investigation team” led by the deputy commissioner of police and supported by the assistant commissioner of police has been established. The team will conduct a thorough investigation, and the report will be submitted to the inspector-general of police.
On Tuesday, Siminalayi Fubara, the governor of Rivers, inaugurated a seven-member panel to investigate the killings and destruction of properties at the LGA secretariats. Fubara tasked the panel with identifying the causes of the violence and those responsible for the attacks.
