The House of Representatives has decided to probe the alleged missing 178,459 rifles and ammunition in the Nigeria Police Force, as reported by the Auditor General of the Federation in his 2019 report.

This followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by the Deputy Minority Leader, Rep. Toby Okechukwu.

The Nation had reported that the Auditor General for the Federation said in the report that over 88,000 of the missing arms are AK-47 assault rifles which could not be accounted for by the Police.

Okechukwu, who proposed the motion, called attention to the ongoing struggle against terrorism and banditry, noting that these weapons may have ended up in the wrong hands.

However, Deputy Speaker Ahmed Idris Wase stated that the criminal aspect of the investigation should be left to the Adhoc Committee established by the House, while the House Committee on Public Account should be allowed to investigate the whereabouts of the arms in accordance with its constitutional mandate.

Wase, who said he had a lot of information to keep to himself, believes the problem of missing arms isn’t confined to the police.
