OUR STORY: Elegushi Royal Family Breaks Silence On Unilag Students Who ‘Reportedly’ Died On The Beach.

The Elegushi royal family has denied wide spread media reports that claimed two ladies died at the popular Elegushi beach two weeks ago, the family agreed that there was a heavy tide that swept off the two ladies who were swimming in the water, they however affirmed that the ladies were rescued by lifeguards on the beach but they eventually died at the hospital.

Speaking with journalists at the Elegushi’s palace on Friday, June 17th, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation and a chief in the Elegushi kingdom, Prince Anofiu Olanrewaju Elegushi said “Though there was an incident on the beach, the two ladies however, did not die on the beach as it had been reported in several news mediums.

Prince Olanrewaju said “Our resolution is to assist the government in their investigation, hence the need for us to suspend the activities of the beach till sometimes next week.

“It is widely known that security awareness has been a major one at Elegushi beach over the years, we handle security matters seriously and as such, we won’t feign ignorance at what had happened’.

Continuing he said “We need to clarify and state clearly that the girls did not die at the beach but at the hospital, it is true and on record that they had gone close to the water to swim on a day that we had high tide. On this particular day, we had already placed a red flag which indicates that no one is allowed to go near the water.

“Some of our lifeguards who normally ride on horses around the beach had even cautioned the ladies to stay away from the water but they insisted on swimming, they were having fun in the water until that moment when the high tide wave happened which made the girls fall into the water; they were however rescued immediately by our lifeguards and rushed to the hospital where they eventually passed on”.

A very emotional Prince Olanrewaju Elegushi said “We feel very sad about what had happened as much as we condemn media reports that the girls died in Elegushi beach. We mourn with their families and we’ve already reached out to them and supported them with the burial rites, we pray that God would grant them the fortitude to bear the loss and we promise to be more cautious next time to avert any form of accident on the beach”.

Also at the event, the Olisa of Ikate Land, Chief Moruf Adisa Sanni Elegushi, explained that there had never been any record of death on the beach due to high security measures taken by the Elegushi royal family.

In his words, he said “We have an effective rescue team that’s always on ground to avert any form of accident and to caution visitors from going close to the water whenever there’s an heavy tide. This had been the way we operated over the years and same security measures were put in place the day the two ladies paid a visit to the beach.

“We wish to correct the negative impression of the public that the young ladies died on the beach, it never happened, they died in the hospital after been rescued by our security team”.

‘Already, we have constituted a committee already to conduct an in-house investigation of the sad event and also to re-evaluate our security structure in order to avert any terrible future occurrence’.
