Attorney-general of the Federation, Abubakar Malami has vindicated the senate president Bukola Saraki of his alleged link with suspects of the deadly offa bank robbery.
Malami in a letter dated June 22, 2018, sent to the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, said that there was no evidence that linked Saraki and Kwara State governor Abdulfattah Ahmed to the armed robbery attack that claimed 31 lives including nine police officers in April.
“For the Senate President and the Kwara State Governor, this office is unable to establish from the evidence in the interim report a nexus between the alleged office and the suspects,” the letter reads.
Chief of Staff to the Kwara State Governor, Yusuf Abdulwahab who was Wednesday granted an interim bail on Wednesday was also cleared, with the prosecutor saying “no evidence is credible enough to sustain any charge based on any offence known to law against him.”
The letter which was signed for Malami by Director of Public Prosecutions, Mohammed Umar only recognizes six prime suspects: Ayoade Akinnibosun, Ibikunle Ogunleye, Adeola Ibrahim, Salawudeen Azeez, Niyi Ogundiran and Mr Adikwu should be charged to court with the offences of criminal conspiracy, armed robbery and culpable homicide punishable with death with Olalekan Alabi, a personal assistant to Kwara State Governor, be charged for illegal possession of arms.
Saraki has been invited twice for questioning with the latest on Monday night around 8 pm.
He was asked to report for “further investigation” at the office of intelligence response team (IRT) office in Abuja on Tuesday but did not honour stating that it was deliberately sent late in other to stop the planned defection by aggrieved APC lawmakers and to keep him also in the party.
“This plot aimed at compelling me and my associates to stay in a party where members are criminalised without just cause, where injustice is perpetrated at the highest level and where there is no respect for constitutionalism is an exercise in futility and it will fail,” Saraki said.
Also, his decision to not honour the police invitation may not be unconnected to the report that he was going to be impeached by a band of APC senators on Tuesday.
Some officials of Kwara State government were also arrested and one of the vehicles allegedly used in the robbery was found in the home of a commissioner. All the state officials denied allegations, and some were later released without charges.
