Nigerian filmmaker and producer Seun Egbegbe has shared his experiences during his time in jail.

Egbegbe was remanded in prison on February 10, 2017, for allegedly obtaining money by pretense from 40 Bureau De Change operators between 2015 and 2017.

He was charged with fraud involving $90,000, £12,550, and ₦39,098,100.

Despite being granted N5 million bail, he remained in custody for five years and eight months before being acquitted in 2022.

In a recent conversation with actress Biola Adebayo, Egbegbe described his early days in jail as a “nightmare”.

He recounted praying fervently for survival due to the high mortality rate among inmates. “I told God that if you truly exist, then I must leave here alive,” he said.

“People die every day in that prison. It is not a good place. If you go and return, thank God. Know that He loves you. He has given you a second chance to live.”

Egbegbe also shared his experience in the “welcome cell”, a holding area for new prisoners, where he claimed that at least two out of twenty new prisoners would be found dead by morning.

He stated that he was sent to jail on one count after his lawyer helped him clear the other 44 charges.

Egbegbe expressed his desire to visit prisons across Nigeria to support inmates.
