Nigerian-Born Benin’s Record Scorer Razak Omotoyossi Dies At 38

News of Razak Omotoyossi’s passing emerged on Tuesday, August 19, 2025.

Though born in Nigeria, Omotoyossi elected to represent Benin and became one of the West African country’s most celebrated footballers, scoring 21 goals in 55 international appearances.

He ranks among Benin’s all-time leading scorers. His most memorable performance came during the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, when he scored all four goals in Benin’s impressive 4–1 victory over Togo, earning him the joint top scorer accolade for that campaign alongside Samuel Eto’o.

At club level, Omotoyossi enjoyed a successful career in Sweden with Helsingborgs IF—featuring in the UEFA Champions League—before moving to France to play for FC Metz.

He also played professionally in South Africa, Libya, Egypt, Syria, and Moldova, where he was widely admired for his relentless work ethic and keen goal-scoring instincts.

Beyond his impressive statistics, Omotoyossi embodied resilience, sacrifice, and loyalty throughout his career.
