The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced that Nigeria provides 24-hour electricity to neighboring countries Togo, Benin Republic, and Niger.

During an interview on Channels TV’s ‘Sunday Politics,’ Sule Abdulaziz, TCN’s chief executive officer, stated that some Nigerians also receive a 24-hour power supply.

“We supply Togo, we supply Benin and Niger. Yes, they get power from Nigeria on a 24-hour basis and they are paying,” Abdulaziz explained.

He added that certain Nigerians, especially those in “Band A,” enjoy between “20 to 22 hours” of electricity daily.

Abdulaziz also clarified that every electricity distribution company (DisCo) has Band A customers, and it’s their priority to provide them with about “22 or 24 hours” of power.

However, he noted that the DisCos are mandated by regulators to supply “between 18 hours and 22 hours” of electricity.

Additionally, Abdulaziz mentioned that TCN is not responsible for all grid collapses in the country, saying, “It can be from generation, it can be from transmission, and it can be from distribution.” He emphasized that the cause of any collapse must be investigated to identify the source.

On October 13, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) revealed that international customers owe N9.41 billion for electricity supplied in the second quarter (Q2) of 2024.
