A 27-year-old man, Ejike Okata, has been arrested by operatives of the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly hacking his 50-year-old neighbour, Adeyiba Oladipupo, to death.

The suspect, who hails from Onueke in Eza South Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, was said to have hacked the deceased to death over a minor disagreement.

Okata committed the offense on Friday and was arrested on Sunday.

A statement by the Command’s Spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi, in Abeokuta on Sunday, indicated that the suspect was arrested following a report by the younger brother of the deceased, who reported at Obalende Police Station, Ijebu-Ode on Friday that his elder sister who lives in the same compound with the suspect at Ayegbami area of Ijebu-Ode was macheted to death and the suspect took to his heels after carrying out the act.

Oyeyemi said: “Upon the report, the DPO Obalende Division, Omonijo Sunday, mobilized his detectives to the scene where the corpse of the victim was recovered and taken to Ijebu-Ode General Hospital mortuary for autopsy, while a serious manhunt was launched for the fleeing suspect.”

The efforts of the detectives yielded positive results when the suspect was about boarding an Ebonyi State-bound bus.

He was apprehended by policemen who had already laid an ambush for him due to intelligence information they already had about him.

On interrogation, Oyeyemi said the suspect confessed to committing the crime because she accused him of stealing a phone, which angered him.

The suspect confessed further that he cut off the woman’s two hands because she engaged in a struggle for the cutlass with him.

The Commissioner, Ogun State State Police Command, Kenneth Ebrimson, has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation and prosecution.
