Man Bags Life Imprisonment For Raping UNILAG Student

A Lagos State Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court, Ikeja, on Tuesday, sentenced a man, Collins Okechukwu, to life imprisonment for raping and robbing a 25-year-old student at the University of Lagos, Akoka.

Delivering judgment, Justice Abiola Soladoye, who described Okechukwu as a pathological liar, held that the prosecution proved the charges of rape and robbery against Okechukwu beyond a reasonable doubt.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the judge sentenced Okechukwu to life imprisonment for rape, and 21 years imprisonment for robbery.

She said, “The testimony of the defense portrayed him as a pathological liar in the sense that he claimed that University of Lagos Guest House was fully booked and the survivor was sex-starved, which made them have sex on the bare floor.

“This is unbelievable and watery.

“The defendant lured the survivor into the admin block, brought out a pistol, raped her, and robbed her of her valuables thereafter.

“The claim of the defendant to have met the survivor at the guest house and she agreed to have sex with him was consistently laced with irregularities and found unreliable.

“The defendant is found guilty as charged of the two offenses and sentenced to life imprisonment in respect to rape and 21 years jail term for robbery.

“The sentences shall run concurrently.

“He should have his name entered in the Sex Offenders Register of the Lagos State Government.”

Sholadoye also cautioned female students in tertiary institutions against giving out their telephone numbers to strangers.

“What manner of a woman is the victim herself? She should desist from giving out her numbers for unnecessary frolicking,” the judge said.

NAN reported that four witnesses testified at the trial and three exhibits were tendered.

According to prosecution counsel, Mr. Peter Owolabani, the convict committed the crimes on December 17, 2017, at 9 pm behind the Faculty of Arts Building, UNILAG.

He said the convict also robbed the survivor of her phones, money, and a gold chain.

Owolabi submitted that the survivor met the convict one year after the incident, invited him to her supposed birthday party, and got him arrested.

Gathering Ali Baba’s friends, family, and business associates, the celebration was held on Sunday at Lagos.

An event at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Christ The Lord Central Parish in Lekki, served as the kickoff for the dedication.

At an event centre on Hakeem Dickson Street in Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, there was a reception held after the service.

Other guests at the event included Chigul, Bunmi Davis, Ajebo Comedian, and Adebola Williams.

Ali Baba had on April 1 announced that his wife, Mary was delivered a set of triplets.

Many, however, did not believe the information which they tagged April Fools’ message.

BREAKING: Ikeja Electric Slashes Tariff For Band A Customers By 9%

The energy rate for Band A users of Ikeja Electric Distribution Company (IE) has been reduced from N225/kWh to N206.80/kWh

In a circular signed by the management of the company on Monday, IE said the customers will now pay N206.80/kwh, rather than the stipulated N225/kwh ordered by the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

According to the statement, IE guaranteed to provide 20 to 24 hours of electricity to users under this Band, adding that the tariff for customers under other categories will remain the same.

“Dear Esteemed Customers

“Please be informed of the downward tariff review of our Band A feeders from N225/kwh to N206.80/kwh effective 6th May 2024 with guaranteed availability of 20-24hrs supply daily.The tariff for Bands B, C, D, and E remains unchanged.

80% Of Lekki Buildings Have No Government Approval — Physical Planning Commissioner, Oluyinka Olumide

Oluyinka Olumide, Lagos State’s commissioner for physical planning and urban development, says 80 percent of buildings in the Ibeju Lekki-Epe corridor have no government approval.

The Lagos government has been facing backlash for the demolition of buildings and shanties across the state.

Tokunbo Wahab, commissioner for environment in Lagos, has repeatedly said the demolished structures were erected in contravention of the city’s masterplan, were never approved by the relevant agencies, and occluded drainage channels.

Olumide, in an interview with journalists, said despite the rigorous procedures involved in getting government’s approval, property developers and owners are still circumventing due process.

“Just last Thursday and Friday, my team and I were in the Ibeju Lekki and Epe axis and you would agree that anybody passing through that corridor would see a lot of estates marked,” he said.

“We went there, and I can tell you that from what we saw, over 80 percent of them do not have approval.

“The procedure to get approval is first to get the planning information, as to what those areas have been zoned for. In this case, what we have is agricultural land, and people now go to their families to buy agricultural land.

“Of course, those lands would be sold because those families do not know the use such land would be put to.

“The next thing to do is the fence permit. If you missed the earlier information on not knowing the area zoning, at the point of getting the fence permit, you would be able to detect what the area is zoned for. After that, the layout permits a large expanse of land.

“So, you can see all these layers. But people still go ahead to start advertising. Some have even gone to the extent of displaying the sizes they want to sell. Imagine someone in the diaspora who wants to send money without any knowledge.

“Then, no approval is eventually gotten. Even if they pass the assignment and the survey to them, we would not grant the individual permit, because that area is not zoned for that purpose.”

Recall that Wahab, on Sunday, said owners of recently demolished property in Maryland had been served notices since 2021.

“We are not just doing demolitions. The law allows us to remove encumbrances on the right of way of the drainage channels,” Wahab said on Channels Television.
