The police in Kebbi State have confirmed that suspected members of the Lakurawa terrorist group were behind a deadly assault on Tungan Taura and Tungan Ladan villages in Augie Local Government Area, which claimed the lives of 16 residents.
According to Nafiu Abubakar, spokesperson for the state’s police command, the assault happened on April 6 at approximately 6 p.m.
“The attackers arrived in large numbers, rustled an unspecified number of cattle, and engaged in a deadly confrontation with community members, which led to the tragic loss of sixteen lives,” the statement reads.
Following the incident, Bello Sani, Kebbi State’s police commissioner, directed the immediate deployment of more tactical units, including the police, military, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and local vigilantes to the affected locations.
“Our resolve to rid Kebbi State of banditry and other violent crimes remains firm. We are deploying all available resources to ensure that the perpetrators of this senseless act are brought to justice,” the police spokesperson quoted the commissioner as having said.
The statement further noted that stability has since returned to the villages, and a thorough investigation is currently in progress.
