Fouad Oki, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has claimed that President Bola Tinubu made efforts to mediate the leadership crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly during the Christmas holiday.
On Monday, Lagos State lawmakers impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa over allegations of misconduct, abuse, and financial misappropriation. Obasa was replaced by his former deputy, Mojisola Meranda.
In his reaction to the impeachment, Oki revealed that Tinubu tried to intervene in the crisis, but Obasa’s unyielding stance led to his eventual removal.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Oki explained that the party’s Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) brought the issue to Tinubu’s attention during the Christmas holiday when the president was in Lagos.
“Before the president came home, this issue had been lingering. In the wisdom of members of the GAC, the president’s attention was called,” Oki said.
He continued, “The president, as father and leader, called a meeting wherein he tried to make sense of the observations raised by elders of the party. Unfortunately, the president saw by himself a recalcitrant Obasa. I think that is what broke the camel’s back.”
Oki further described Obasa’s impeachment as “foreseeable,” accusing him of acting like an “emperor” and suggesting that recent events had signaled the end of his leadership.
He stressed that the decision to impeach Obasa was not made lightly, emphasizing that it was the result of unresolved tensions and Obasa’s refusal to listen to the advice of party elders.
