Abba Yusuf, the governor of Kano, distributed 7,158 red goats to 2,386 women across the state.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Sanusi Dawakin-Tofa, the governor’s spokesperson, explained that this distribution marked the beginning of the second phase of the women empowerment initiative under the Livestock Fattening Programme of the Kano Agro-Pastoral Development Project.

According to Dawakin-Tofa, the initiative, valued at N2.3 billion, is designed to reduce poverty and promote economic self-sufficiency.

The program involved providing livestock to women in all 44 local government areas of Kano. Each beneficiary received three goats to support their efforts in livestock entrepreneurship.

“The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to addressing poverty through innovative and inclusive approaches,” he said.

The spokesperson also noted that subsequent phases of the program would include the distribution of 1,342 cows and 1,822 rams to women and youth.

“Yusuf said the initiative was part of his administration’s broader strategy to empower vulnerable groups and foster economic independence among women and youth in the state,” he added.

“He warned the beneficiaries against using the livestock for other purposes, stressing the need for accountability and responsibility in the programme.”

Dawakin-Tofa mentioned that the initiative “reflected the administration’s focus on sustainable development and empowering communities to stimulate grassroots economic growth.”

“By integrating women and youth into the agricultural value chain, the programme aims to enhance household income and reduce dependency on government aid,” he said.

“The initiative has been widely praised as a significant effort to improve livelihoods, strengthen food security, and create wealth in Kano’s rural communities.”
