Former Military President of Nigeria, retired General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, has stated that late Basorun Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola was the rightful winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

General Babangida shared this revelation in his autobiography, “A Journey in Service,” which was launched in Abuja on Thursday.

He remarked: “There was no doubt in my mind; MKO Abiola won the election.

“He satisfied all the requirements.”

Babangida conveyed his message through a former Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, who also reviewed the book.

He explained that Abiola, the Social Democratic Party’s candidate in the June 12, 1993 presidential race, not only secured the majority of votes but also had the geographical spread needed to become president. He added that the annulment of the election remains the most difficult moment of his life.

He also expressed his satisfaction that President Muhammadu Buhari acknowledged Abiola’s victory and posthumously awarded him the title of Grand Commander of the Federal Republic, the highest national honor reserved for presidents.
