Kayode Egbetokun, the inspector-general of police (IGP), has ordered an investigation into Wasiu Ayinde, the veteran Fuji musician also known as KWAM 1, over allegations of unruly behaviour at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
KWAM1, who was on a ValueJet flight on August 5, was observed drinking from a flask and was approached by a flight attendant who suspected the contents were alcohol, a substance banned on aircraft in Nigeria.
The attendant reportedly asked the musician to hand over the flask, but Kwam 1 declined, claiming it contained medication prescribed by his doctor.
After refusing to surrender the flask, the flight crew removed the celebrity from the aircraft.
In response, an irate KWAM 1 moved to the front of the plane in an attempt to stop it from departing.
In a statement on Tuesday, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, police public relations officer (PPRO), said the force had received an official petition from the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) regarding the matter.
Adejobi stated that the IGP had instructed the commissioner of police, airport command, to “immediately commence a thorough investigation into the matter, to unravel the circumstances which led to the ugly incident and ensure justice is served accordingly”.
“The Force hereby assures the public of its commitment to upholding safety and security within Nigeria’s aviation sector, while assuring stakeholders in the sector of improved collaboration towards aviation security and strict compliance with aviation laws,” the statement reads.
