At least 12 shops were destroyed in a fire outbreak that occurred on Thursday night in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.
According to The Punch, Eyewitnesses on Friday said that the blaze started at approximately 10:55pm at Block A, No 64, Mayegun Cement Store Market, Araromi, Agodi-Gate in Ibadan, and burned for over three hours before it was brought under control.
Reports indicate that goods worth several millions of naira were lost in the fire.
Further findings revealed that the incident was caused by an electricity surge near combustible materials.
Confirming the fire to our correspondent in Ibadan on Friday, the General Manager of the state fire service, Yemi Akinyinka, said the agency received the “distressed call” at exactly 11:02 pm.
He stated, “The agency’s control room received the ‘distressed call’ at exactly 23:02 hrs on Thursday, April 10, 2025, via telephone and Mr Young reporting a ‘shop fire’ at the mentioned location.
“The fire crew, under the leadership of Cfs Jimoh, was immediately dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, we found several lockup shops engulfed in flames, and we quickly launched efforts to contain the fire and stop it from reaching nearby shops.
“The blaze affected 12 shops out of many in the market, but we successfully saved property valued in the billions of naira. Our unit returned to the station at 03:18hrs and remains on standby.”
