The Nigerian Prisons Service on Saturday said the suspected mastermind of the 2010 Independence Day bombings in Abuja, Charles Okah, has not escaped from Kuje Prison in Abuja, where he is being kept.
But the prisons authorities said there was a jail break attempt on Friday night.
News had filtered out on Saturday morning that Okah had scaled the Kuje Prison fence alongside some other prisoners and escaped.
But the spokesman of the NPS, Francis Enobore, told PREMIUM TIMES on Saturday: “He is there (Kuje prison) hale and hearty.
“The comptroller of prisons in charge of the FCT was there less than 30 minutes ago and he saw him there. I spoke to the controller.”
Enobore, however, confirmed a jail break at the prison on Friday night to PREMIUM TIMES.
He said: “Yes there was an incident yesterday, but Henry Okah was not involved.
“The Comptroller of Prisons has ordered an investigation and that is going on.
“We want to know if anybody escaped and if yes, what are their identities.”
