Indian health workers have begun a nationwide strike to protest the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a government hospital in Kolkata.
The discovery of the 31-year-old doctor’s body on August 9 sparked widespread outrage and protests across the country.
An autopsy confirmed sexual assault, and the victim’s parents suspect gang-rape.
The Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) called for a nationwide halt of elective services, demanding better security measures and justice for the victim.
Thousands of doctors marched in Kolkata, holding signs that read “Hands that heal shouldn’t bleed”, “Enough is enough”, and “Hang the rapist”.
Although the health minister accepted some of the protest demands, the strike continues until all demands are met.
Hospitals and clinics are turning away patients except for emergency cases, and citizens from various professions are joining the protests.
A man who worked at the hospital has been detained in connection with the crime.
