Google has launched a messaging app which may ultimately give Facebook and its subsidiary, WhatsApp, a run for their money.

Released on Wednesday, the Allo platform is not exclusive to Android devices; it cuts across both Android and iOS operating systems.

Allo represents the latest venture for the artificial intelligence powered Google Assistant.

For users it is not only a messaging app as you can also subscribe to a variety of news and information sites and recieve notifications at which ever time you choose.

According to Android Police, if you’ve already used WhatsApp, you will feel an eery resemblance to Allo from the first moment you try out the app.

There are similarities everywhere in the interface and the way things work.

Most importantly, you sign in with a phone number, not a username and password, or any other means of identification.

Although the app debuts features that are not presently found on WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger, it’s not farfetched to say Allo was inspired by WhatsApp.
