Ajibola Basiru, national secretary of the All Progressives Congress, has urged former Kaduna State governor Nasir el-Rufai to find something productive to do and stop distracting President Bola Tinubu.
Basiru, in an interview with Tribune Online on Sunday, responded to el-Rufai’s comments made in Sokoto while addressing African Democratic Congress supporters in the north-west during the opposition party’s grassroots mobilisation.
El-Rufai had warned Nigerians against voting for the APC in the next presidential election, saying the country may not survive another four years under the Tinubu administration. He stated that he joined the coalition to remove the APC from power and was ready to mobilise citizens to eject the “incompetent” ruling party.
In reaction, Basiru questioned el-Rufai’s timing and advised him to wait for the appropriate political season.
“Why is he in a hurry? 2027 is far. The guidelines for the 2027 elections won’t be out until February 2026. El-Rufai should go and find a job to do,” he said.
“He can go back to school to enrich his knowledge, or play with his grandchildren. We are too busy fixing our party, and Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is busy with governance. He should not distract us.”
