Glitz And Glamour Of Ojude Oba Festival 2024

The city of Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, came alive on June 18, 2024, as the Ijebu people celebrated their annual Ojude Oba festival. The event, which holds every year on the third day of the Muslim Eid-el-Kabir, is a colourful and spectacular carnival that brings the town to a halt.

The festival is an annual celebration of the culture and traditions of the Ijebu people, paying homage to the King, Alaiyeluwa Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Adetona, Ogbagba II, Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland. This year’s theme, “OJUDE OBA: Unity and Harmony, Our Gifts,” underscored the importance of communal harmony and cultural pride.

The festival featured a stunning display of colourful attire by various age groups, known as ‘regberegbe’, alongside horse-riding competitions and an array of rich cultural performances. The regberegbe, composed of indigenes, their friends, and associates, paraded at the front courtyard of the king’s palace, wearing bright-coloured attires in traditional styles made from sanyan, alaari, etu, adire to the more contemporary brocades and laces.

The event was attended by dignitaries, including the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, and other prominent sons and daughters of Ijebuland. The festival was marked by a display of glamour, glitz and cultural pride, as the Ijebu people celebrated their heritage and tradition.

The Ojude Oba festival is a significant event for the Yoruba people, particularly the Ijebu community in Ogun State, Southwest, drawing individuals worldwide. The festival is an annual event that celebrates the culture and traditions of the Ijebu people, paying homage to the King and the monarch.
