The Senate has suspended a former Leader of the Senate, Senator Ali Ndume.

Ndume was suspended on Wednesday.

However, the length of the suspension was for six months, contrary to the one year recommended by the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges.

The committee had in its report to the plenary recommended Ndume’s suspension for one year for failing to do due diligence before bringing up two issues before the whole house.

Ndume had last week through a Point of Order brought to the notice of the Senate the allegation of the purchase of a Range Rover Jeep worth N298 million by the President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki.

He also called the attention of the Senate to the issue of certificate scandal on Senator Dino Melaye.

The Senate, based on Ndume’s observation, asked the Committee on Ethics and Privileges to look into the allegations.

Both Saraki and Melaye were cleared by the committee on Monday.

At the plenary on Wednesday, where the committee, headed by Senator Sam Anyanwu, presented its report, Ndume was said to have failed as a Ranking Senator to follow the laid down rule of investigating a matter before bringing it up on the floor.

The report of the committee, which was given four weeks, but ended up submitting its findings in just one week, was backed by most of the senators present.

They however reduced the sanction to six months instead of one year.
