The military junta in Niger Republic severed ties with Nigeria after the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) failed to resolve the current impasse.
To prevent a fight with the junta, ECOWAS set a seven-day ultimatum for President Mohamed Bazoum’s reinstatement.
On Thursday, however, President Bola Tinubu dispatched a high-level delegation to the country to speak with the coup leaders.
The mission, led by General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), solely met with junta representatives.
As a result, Niger lost connections with Nigeria, Togo, its coloniser, France, and the United States.
“The functions of the extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassadors of the Republic of Niger” to France, Nigeria, Togo, and the United States are terminated,” Radio France International quoted one of the putschists to have said on national television.
