Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election, insisting that Nigeria must be “rescued from the ICU.”

Atiku made the declaration on Sunday during an event in Lagos where members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He was represented at the ceremony by Professor Ola Olateju of Achievers University.

He explained that his decision to run again was not driven by personal ambition but by the urgent need to reposition the country. “Nigeria is critically ill and requires immediate rescue. This is not about me but about saving the nation,” Atiku said.

The former vice president, who has contested multiple times in past elections, added that opposition unity remains crucial to defeating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

Atiku’s declaration comes months after he previously stated that his decision on 2027 would depend on political developments and the strength of opposition platforms ahead of the polls.
