FG Reiterates Commitment To Ease Passport Availability For Nigerians As Aregbesola Commissions Ilesa Passport Front Office And Production Centre [PHOTOS]

The Federal Government on Tuesday restated her commitment to ameliorating the challenges encountered by Nigerians in applying for and obtaining the Nigerian Passport, through improved service delivery and streamlining of its operations.

The government is also working assiduously to adequately address the growing number of Nigerians who need the passport for other purposes.

Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, stated this in Ilesa, at the commissioning of the Ilesa Passport Front Office and Production Centre, of the Nigeria Immigration Service in Ilesa, Osun State.

Aregbesola noted that the surge in the number of applications necessitates the establishment of more passport front offices across the country, which is born out of the determination of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration to further make the process seamless.

The Minister said: “In recent years, there has been an upsurge in passport demands by Nigerians. The first factor in this upsurge was the COVID-19 pandemic that affected our production schedule, due to restrictions on human movement. This created a backlog that we were trying to clear when an unprecedented number of Nigerians now decided to travel outside the country and applied for passport, thereby compounding the backlog challenge.

“Then of course, the panic buying syndrome kicked in. Many people who had no immediate need of passport then started applying, creating a deluge of applications. Thankfully, that is behind us now. The backlogs have all been cleared and we are producing on schedule in all our centres.

“Fresh application will take six weeks after biometric data capture, while renewal requires just three weeks. To respond to the challenge, we increased our production capacity. In 2021, we produced one million booklets. Last year, we increased production to 1.8 million, nearly doubling our efforts. We shall keep working at it to ensure that we provide for as many Nigerians that are desirous of the passport.

“The Passport Front Office we are commissioning today is one of the ways we are responding to increased demand for passport, especially to reduce the waiting time for biometric data capture. We have opened this front office in Alimosho, Katsina, Zaria, Daura and in several Nigerian missions abroad in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, where the enhanced passport is being rolled out.

“This front desk is not an express centre. It is also not a full-fledged passport office like the ones in Osogbo, Ibadan or Akure. However, a front office is where application will be made and biometric data of the applicant will be collected. It is a non-judgemental centre, meaning that no decision will be made here, but the application and biometric data of the applicants will be collected and forwarded to the NIS for processing and issuing.

“We need as many centres as possible to accommodate the huge number of those applying every day, day and night, on our online platform, to reduce the waiting time before data capture to the barest minimum. Our target is to reduce the waiting period for biometric data capture to not more than one week, after application.”

Aregbesola further stressed that since his Inception at the Ministry, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has been repositioned especially in the engendering of a passport production system and process that is in compliance with global best practices in technology.

He also urged new applicants for the Nigerian passport to apply early so as not to fall in the hands of scammers and other opportunities.

“One of the burdens we bear everyday is of desperate travellers who needed a passport today to be able to travel tomorrow. Except for medical emergencies and overriding national interest, there is hardly any emergency in travelling. This is because travelling, whether for studies, business or pleasure, requires planning and it takes time.
I will urge applicants for the Nigerian passport therefore to apply early enough before their travel date to avoid cutting corners and falling into the hands of scammers and other opportunists. It is important also that they apply by themselves at the Nigeria Immigration Service portal and not through touts and unscrupulous officials, which often bring heartaches.

“The reforms we have introduced to passport administration are meant to ease operation and confer integrity on the Nigerian passport. We are also linking passport with other identity platforms, in line with the national policy of creating a central identity database, for ease of national administration and national security. This is why NIN is linked with passport application. It is important therefore that applicants’ data, including order of name and date of birth sync with their record with NIN. Any discrepancy will stall their application for passport, until they are able to resolve it.”

Speaking at the event, the Governor of Osun, Senator Ademola Adeleke commended the Minister, Ogbeni Aregbesola for being a worthy ambassador of the state, reassuring him of the state’s support in all ramifications.

Governor Adeleke who affirmed his resolve as a progressive, promised to complete all projects of the former Governor abandoned by the immediate past adminstration.

“No matter the party you are, if you are a progressive, you are a progressive if you are doing what the people want. When he was Governor, he loved the people and the people loved him. All the projects Ogbeni left, it was abandoned for years. I promised the people during my campaign that I was going to continue the projects, that is what I am doing.

“As a civilised person, no matter the party you are, you will always love progress. That is what I will always continue to ensure that all developmental projects are continued. As a federal minister from the state, we are proud of your achievements and we will continue to be proud of you.”

“Mr. Minister, I am assuring you, that this is your state, nobody can chase you away. This is your state, you are welcome at anytime. Even, you can come around to the Government House. When I complete all of the structures I am currently working on at the Government House, I will personally invite you to commission it.

Earlier in his address, the Controller General, Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Isah Jere Idris, commended the leadership of the Ministry of Interior, for providing transformational leadership for the service.

Idris said in the last few years, efforts have been concerted to make sure that Nigerians are able to easily access the Passport and other services, in guaranteeing internal security, in the most convenient way.

Other ignitaries at the event include the Osun Deputy Governor, Kola Adewusi, SSG, Teslim Igbalaye, Speaker, Osun House of Assembly, Hon. Timothy Owoeye, top echelon of the NIS, political functionaries in the APC and PDP in Osun, among others.

Seven NSCDC Officers Missing After Boko Haram Attack In Kaduna

Published

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has reported that suspected Boko Haram terrorists ambushed its monitoring team in Kaduna, leaving seven officers missing.

In a statement on Tuesday, Afolabi Babawale, the NSCDC spokesperson, explained that the incident occurred on Monday in the Farin-Kasa area of Chikun LGA, Kaduna, while the monitoring team was inspecting the national grid installation in Shiroro, Niger State.

Babawale stated that the team, consisting of nine officers and 71 other ranks, was mobilized in response to recent attacks on power lines that had caused a blackout in northern Nigeria.

“As they patrolled vulnerable areas, they encountered stranded expatriates near Dagwachi village and allowed them to join the convoy for safety,” the statement reads.

“Unbeknownst to the team, over 200 armed Boko Haram militants had laid a deadly ambush from a hilltop, ready to unleash a torrent of gunfire on the unsuspecting convoy.

“Determined and resourceful, the NSCDC operatives fought back valiantly, managing to neutralise over 50 insurgents during the exchange.

“However, the chaos left seven officers unaccounted for, prompting an urgent search in the bush for their whereabouts. Those who sustained injuries are currently receiving medical treatment.”

Ahmed Audi, the NSCDC commandant-general, condemned the attack, calling it a cowardly act against personnel dedicated to the nation’s defence.

He praised the bravery and determination of the operatives, reiterating the corps’ commitment to safeguarding critical national assets and infrastructure despite the growing security threats.

Obi’s Consumption-To-Production Mantra Not Backed By Any Policy Document — Doyin Okupe

Published

on

Doyin Okupe has stated that Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, did not present any policy document to support his “consumption-to-production” mantra during the campaign.

Okupe, who was a former director-general of the LP presidential campaign, made these comments on Tuesday while evaluating President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

He argued that Tinubu has a more comprehensive policy document than his rivals in the 2023 elections.

Okupe also claimed that Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), based his plans on theoretical loan arrangements.

He said that Tinubu has “meticulously” implemented the “renewed hope agenda” and has worked to pay off crippling debts in order to stabilize the economy.

“Tinubu has a better policy document than any of his two rivals during the 2023 presidential election,” NAN quoted Okupe as saying.

“Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is an experienced, knowledgeable, and thoroughbred politician.

“I know for a fact that he also came with a testament that would have been binding on him and Nigerians.

“But when you put the testament side-by-side the current reality on the ground, it is not applicable.”

Okupe added that the administration of former President Muhammad Buhari faced a dire financial situation, with international institutions refusing to lend loans to Nigeria.

“So, the premise Atiku placed his testament on was sinking, and it can’t work,” he said.

“As for Peter Obi of the Labour Party, he did not give any document to Nigerians that he was going to work on.

“In the Labour Party, we didn’t have a document that we could adopt as a policy document for what was going on.

“All we were saying was that we wanted to take Nigeria from consumption to production; good rhetoric, but it was not grounded either in policy development or principle application.”

Okupe also noted that Tinubu took action on foreign exchange issues, stopping individuals from exploiting earnings through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) connections.

“Two months after getting into government, he put up a committee to look into tax reform, which was in his agenda,” he said.

“This man (Tinubu) has a systematic, reliable, focused, and applicable agenda that can take Nigeria to enviable heights.

“Though I never supported Tinubu ahead of the election; he is not my friend, and we were not in the same party, in retrospect, however, his reform agenda is the most credible.

“The renewed hope agenda he (Tinubu) brought is one that can address, and is addressing, the country’s current challenges.”

The Nigerian Army has promised to probe officers allegedly involved in the assault of a couple in Abuja.

On Tuesday, a video of some soldiers, including a “major general,” seemingly beating up a couple in the nation’s capital city, went viral.

Eyewitnesses said the soldiers stopped the couple for “unlawfully overtaking” their convoy.

The video showed men in military uniforms hitting the man as his wife hollered and protested.

“How did I bash your car? Oh God!!” the man said as he took one punch after another while writhing in pain.

Blood could be seen dripping from the man’s forehead following a slap from a soldier.

The couple said after the assault, the “major general” and his aide handcuffed them, shoved them into the trunk of a car, from where they were whisked to the Gwarimpa police station.

The soldiers reportedly ordered police officers to detain the couple indefinitely.

  • ‘CIRCUMSTANCES LEADING TO INCIDENT UNCLEAR’

In a statement on Wednesday, Onyema Nwachukwu, army spokesperson, said Olufemi Oluyede, the acting chief of army staff, has ordered an immediate investigation of the incident.

“The attention of the Nigerian Army (NA) has been drawn to a viral audio-visual recording circulating on social media platforms, purportedly showing a senior Army officer and 2 other soldiers in an altercation with a man and woman within the Abuja metropolis,” the statement reads.

“The circumstances leading to this incident are not clear at the moment.

“However, the Acting Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has ordered an immediate investigation to unravel the true circumstances surrounding this altercation.

“The NA remains committed to serving and protecting all law-abiding Nigerians as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“Therefore, we urge the public to be rest assured that due diligence will be applied to reach a logical conclusion on this matter.”
