Wike Camp Fixes PDP Convention For March 28

Published

on

The Wike/Anyanwu faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday unfolded plans to hold the National Convention on March 28 and 29 in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The proposed convention followed last week’s judgment of the Federal High Court in Ibadan, affirming Abdulrahman Mohammed’s caretaker committee as the authentic leadership of the party.

Justice Uche Agomoh also voided the November 16, 2025, convention of the PDP in Ibadan and all the decisions taken thereafter because the convention was stopped by two Federal High Court judgments.

Kabiru Turaki (SAN) was elected at the convention along with other members of his National Working Committee (NWC).

The convention also expelled senior figures of the party, including Nyesome WIke, former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose, Senator Mao Ohunabuwa, among others.

All these were nullified by the judgment.

Justice Agomoh also directed that only a caretaker committee can run the PDP until another convention elects the leadership.

New members of the National Working Committee (NWC) would be elected at the March 28 convention, according to a statement by the Caretaker Chairman, Mohammed, and National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu.

According to the statement, the decision to hold the convention was taken at the 105th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held at the official residence of the Minister of the FCT, Wike.

The party secretariat, popularly known as Wadata Plaza, has been under lock and key by the police following a bloody battle there between the two factions.

To restore stability and constitutional order, the NEC approved a comprehensive schedule for party congresses across the country.

The Ward and Local Government Congresses will be held in February, while the State Congresses will be held in March 2026.

The NEC mandated the National Caretaker Committee to immediately “activate Convention Sub-Committees and commence full logistical, administrative, and consultative preparations” to ensure the process remains transparent and credible.

The NEC reconfirmed the Mohammed-led National Caretaker Committee as the “only lawful national administrative organ of the Party.”

To prevent any administrative vacuum, the NEC also extended the tenure of Caretaker Committees at the State and Zonal levels.

The faction welcomed the judgment of the Federal High Court in Ibadan, which validated its current leadership structure.

It said: “NEC welcomed and affirmed the judgment… which upheld the legality of the Party’s leadership and administrative arrangements and directed the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to recognize the duly constituted National Caretaker Committee.”

Mohammed declared that the “cloud of uncertainty” hanging over the party had fizzled out.

He described the judgment as a “much-needed legal clarity” that affirmed the legitimacy of his leadership and that of Anyanwu.

He said: “The judgment has conferred existential credibility on the leadership of our great party as presently constituted. This outcome did not come by accident. It is the reward of your collective decision to stand on the side of the law. “

The chairman described 2025 as a “testing and refining period,” noting that the party survived internal attempts to bypass established procedures.

He said the PDP did not collapse under the pressure of judicial challenges but emerged “refined, strengthened and reoriented.”

Mohammed said, “We are today firmly positioned to roll out our activities without hesitation or uncertainty.”

Urging reconciliation, he added: “In this process, there are no absolute losers. I call on all members of our great party, at every level, to jettison divisive tendencies and destructive rhetoric. Now is the time to heal wounds and rebuild trust.”

Mohammed praised Wike for his “intellectual depth” and leadership during the “trying period”, and also extended gratitude to former Senate President Bukola Saraki for his insistence on due process and the “supremacy of the law.”

Wike, at the meeting, declared keen interest in all activities of the Oyo State chapter of the PDP.

Wike insisted that his concern is the survival, stability, and success of the party.

He said: “Let me declare my interest clearly: I am interested in the survival and success of this party. I am also interested in all the happenings in Oyo State PDP.”

Wike said the party would wait for the Caretaker Committee to issue clear directives on the congresses.

However, the National Publicity Secretary of the Turaki faction, Ini Ememobong, dismissed the proposed convention as a ruse.

He said, “Wike and friends are merely living in fools paradise with their proposition. The world knows they are extensions of the APC and therefore cannot claim to be members of the PDP.

“We await the judgment of the appellate courts, and we are hopeful that when the judgments are in, the issues would have been resolved and the court will confirm the reality that the convention held in Ibadan was a reflection of the wishes of the true members of the People’s Democratic Party.”

Why Many Stakeholders See Sen. Sharafadeen Alli as Oyo’s Best Bet for 2027 After Winning Daily Independent’s 2025 Best Legislator Award

Published

on

By Seun Oloketuyi

As the race for the 2027 Oyo State governorship gradually gathers momentum, growing voices within the All Progressives Congress (APC) are presenting Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli as a leading contender whose experience and policy direction position him as a strong option for the state’s next leadership. Supporters argue that his long-standing involvement in governance across multiple levels gives him a rare blend of grassroots and executive experience.

Notably, his profile received a further boost after he was honoured with the 2025 Best Legislator Award by the Daily Independent in Lagos.
Alli’s political journey began at the local government level as chairman of Ibadan North Local Government in 1991, a role often credited with shaping his grassroots appeal. He later moved to the heart of state administration, serving as Secretary to the State Government and Chief of Staff under former governor Rashidi Ladoja from 2003 to 2007, where he was involved in coordinating policies and overseeing implementation. His tenure as chairman of the Odu’a Group further expanded his profile into economic and corporate governance before his election to the Senate to represent Oyo South.
Within the All Progressives Congress, party leaders in the influential Ibarapa zone have already endorsed him as their preferred aspirant, citing his loyalty to the party, ability to unite stakeholders, and deep connection with grassroots structures. His declaration in Ibadan attracted key APC figures, including Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu, former First Lady Florence Ajimobi, and Senator Teslim Folarin, reinforcing perceptions of growing internal backing.
Beyond endorsements, Alli has laid out a policy blueprint that focuses on strengthening local government autonomy, improving security, repositioning education as a hub for innovation, upgrading healthcare services, and revitalising the state economy through agriculture, rural electrification, and better road networks. Supporters say the agenda directly targets issues many residents identify as their most pressing concerns.
He has also criticised the Peoples Democratic Party-led administration in the state, promising to address perceived governance lapses and revive local government administration. At the same time, his alignment with the reform agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is viewed by party insiders as a signal of potential federal–state collaboration that could attract development opportunities.
While the APC primaries remain ahead and other aspirants are expected to emerge, supporters say Alli’s mix of experience, endorsements, legislative recognition, and policy focus explains why many within the party are already describing him as Oyo’s “best bet” for the 2027 governorship race.

Opposition Won’t Scare Me, I Won’t Run From Nigeria’s Challenges —– Tinubu

Published

President Bola Tinubu says he is not intimidated by the opposition, describing them as “noise-makers” who do not respect the rule of law.

He stated this during a meeting with leaders and coordinators of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors from the 36 states of the federation at the State House, Abuja, on Thursday.

The group was led by Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, who is the Director-General of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors.

“They want to scare me off? It is a lie. I have been through this path before,” the President said.

“One thing that you need from me is a promise: I won’t run away from the affairs of the nation. With you, the deal is done.”

Recalling his experience in the 2023 election, the President said the process was challenging but ultimately successful.

“During the primary that brought me here, it was tough. During the general election that brought me here, it was tough,” he said.

Tinubu told the gathering that his political journey, including the primaries and general election that brought him to office, had already prepared him for the current challenges, insisting he would not be distracted.

“I have listened to various comments. I am inspired by all of you. This is an opportunity of a lifetime to break the shackles of poverty and ignorance. To put freedom in the heart of our people, to ensure democracy survives. Not the noise-making, not the rascality of street convention.

“We cannot submit to disobedience of a lawful order of the court. We must embrace the judiciary, whether it favours us or not. We submit to this principle of democracy, separation of powers, and understanding of the dynamics of it, and the nationhood that Nigeria is.

“That we must build one country… one common vision for the progress and prosperity of our people. That’s what Renewed Hope is all about,” he said.

He urged members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to remain united, saying the party must stand against those he said do not want national transformation.

The President also criticised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), referencing his past role as Chairman of the National Council on Privatisation.

Tinubu questioned the outcomes of some privatisation exercises carried out under Atiku’s tenure.

“If you look at one of them… no one without history among this calabash. The head was the Chairman of the Privatisation Council of Nigeria at one time. He privatised the steel industry in Delta— is it working today? No.

“They privatised Ajaokuta. Is it working today? Go on the list. They privatised another man’s political party. That one said no,” he said, drawing a huge laughter from the audience.

Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to governance and national development.

“Let’s go into the details of what we promised Nigerians, and I promise, I won’t let you down,” he said.

He also said the Renewed Hope Ambassadors had been mobilised and empowered to support the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
