Warehouse Looting: Police, NEMA On Red Alert In Lagos Over Food Theft

Published

on

Operatives from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Lagos State Police Command are on high alert in case of an attack on warehouses or commercial centres.

This was verified by the command’s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday.

According to Hundeyin, in order to fend off potential hoodlum attacks, the command has increased security around the state’s several government warehouses that stock food supplies as well as retail centres.

Amidst the hardship and the dilemma of rising costs of living in the nation, several reports of attacks and theft of food trucks and warehouses have been made in numerous locations.

Recall that some youths stole food items from trucks stuck in traffic along Kaduna Road in the Suleja area of Niger State last week.

The attackers reportedly overwhelmed the truck drivers and looted scores of bags of rice before they were dispersed by soldiers.

On Sunday, the Agricultural and Rural Development Secretariat of the Federal Capital Territory Administration confirmed the looting of its warehouse in Dei-Dei by residents in the FCT, over the economic hardship in the country.

Confirming the incident to our correspondent, the spokesperson for the ARD Secretariat, Zakari Aliyu, said the FCT Mandate Secretary, Agric Secretariat, Lawan Geidam, had earlier visited the warehouse, where the residents had looted everything in the store and vandalised the place, removing the roofs and windows.

The FCT Police Command said it had arrested 15 suspects in connection with the vandalism of the warehouse belonging to the Abuja FCDA.

The command’s Public Relations Officer,  SP Josephine Adeh, said this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

However, Hundeyin told NAN that the command was living up to its responsibility of providing security to all and sundry in Lagos.

He noted that the command was not anticipating any such attack, stressing that the deployment was just to check acts of violence in the state.

“The Command is just being alive to its responsibilities. In fact, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adegoke Fayoade, has deployed personnel to vulnerable places.

“Area Commanders, Heads of Tactical Teams and DPOs have also been briefed in that regard.

“Operatives of the state anti-crime outfit, the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), have also been briefed on the need to keep a close watch on government warehouses and malls, where food items and beverages are sold,” he said.

Similarly, NEMA in the South-West Region, said its management had beefed up security around their warehouses.

NEMA’s Coordinator in the South-West Zone, Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye, disclosed this to NAN on Thursday in Lagos.

Farinloye said the move is to forestall any attack on government warehouses by miscreants, who may want to hide under the cover of the current challenge in the country, to break into facilities where food items are stored.

“Although, there’s no single food item in the warehouses but all critical stakeholders are on standby for any attempt by anyone to break into them,” he noted.

He added that they had been directed to beef up security for the safety of all assets of government in the region.

“We are taking worse scenario precautionary safety measures to safeguard both human and other assets of the Federal Government from unforeseen circumstances,” he said.

An explosion occurred at the Tony Okocha-led secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, located along Aba Road, Port Harcourt, on Saturday, October 5, 2024, during the local government election.

The explosion damaged the gate and doors of the secretariat, along with other property. According to Tony Okocha, Chairman of the APC faction in Rivers State, “About 3:20am some gun-trotting young men with their explosives and all that, came here and dropped the first explosive,” but when it did not detonate, “they came back the second time to burn the structure – look at the security house is gone.”

Okocha alleged that the attack was politically motivated, accusing Governor Siminalayi Fubara of responsibility. He stated, “It was deliberate to see how they can annihilate us, it is deliberate to see how they can embarrass us, it is deliberate to see how they can decimate us.”

Despite the incident, accreditation and voting have commenced in several polling centres around Port Harcourt City.

Osun State Vs Segilola: Ministry Of Solid Minerals Development Probe Claims, Cautions Against Divestment

Published

on

The Ministry of Solid Minerals Development is probing the claims and counter-claims of Osun State Government and Thor Explorations Limited, owners of the Segilola Resources Operating Limited over taxation and operational matters.

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake announced today that a fact-finding team has been set up to engage both parties towards resolving the dispute and restoring industrial harmony.

Led by Dr. Mary Ogbe, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Solid Minerals Development (MSMD), the committee will include representatives of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Ministry of Labour and Employment and the National Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA).

The Minister observed that the Federal Government has been marketing opportunities for investments in the solid minerals sector across the world and cautioned that closure of mining operations by subnationals could abort efforts to attract Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) and provoke divestment.

“ Indiscriminate closures of mining operations by subnationals raises the risk of discouraging foreign direct investments and even worse, possible divestment by existing companies. Mining is on the exclusive legislative list. The Ministry of Solid Minerals should be consulted before such disruptive actions are taken.” Dr. Alake asserted.

The Minister reiterated the Federal Government’s interest in raising the tempo of productive activities nationwide to boost economic growth, increase employment and community development.

Dr. Alake stressed that any cessation of industrial production will undermine the goals of economic prosperity, deny workers the opportunity to earn income, and further contribute to adversity.

Alake called on both parties to co-operate with the fact-finding team and allow production to continue while the issues are resolved.

“ I hereby call on His Excellency, the Governor of Osun State, Sen. Ademola Adeleke and the management of Thor Exploration Limited to sue for peace and industrial harmony in the interest of the workers and their dependents who may be adversely affected by closure of operations at the factory.” he added.
