The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress , Senator Bola Tinubu , former governor of Edo State, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole, and Lagos-based lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana, SAN, have chided former President Olusegun Obasanjo over his recent statement where he advised President Muhammadu Buhari not to seek re- election in 2019.

Tinubu, who said Obasanjo was playing politics with the special statement he wrote to the President, explained that if the former President meant well, he would have met with the President to talk about the issues he raised in the letter.

Tinubu spoke in an interview with journalists when he visited Governor Rochas Okorocha in company with the pioneer National Chairman of APC , Chief Bisi Akande , at the Government House in Owerri, on Friday . He said he was in Owerri to see the governor, Rochas Okorocha , who he described as his “good friend” and to pay his respect to the late Chief Alex Ekwueme .
He said, “I believe that would have been the conversation between retired military heads of state. They have unfettered access to each other either through the Council of State or any other means ; he could see the current President privately.

“They both had the same background. He ( Obasanjo ) was also his senior in the army. I think Obasanjo was playing politics with the public letter. That is all I see. They also met at the African Union meeting too. He has a way of discussing with the President any time he wants.”

On the coalition championed by the former President, Tinubu said it was not yet time to speak on the matter.
Meanwhile, Oshiomhole said Obasanjo was not in the right position to give such advice because he was not a known adviser to Buhari.

Speaking with State House correspondents shortly after meeting with the President behind closed doors at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Friday, Oshiomhole said, “I’m not sure when I see the list of the ( President ’s) advisers, that President Obasanjo is one of the advisers.

“I also recall with respect that the day President Obasanjo was inaugurating some of his advisers , he did say that anybody who is his adviser can advise him, he will make his own decisions. I think that principle still stands.”

He said it was important for Buhari to know he had men and women who had huge confidence in his leadership ability, especially during trying times.

He said, “Nigeria was below ground level and from what you guys report that I read, we have always had challenges but never in terms of this scale and magnitude.

“What President Buhari inherited is difficult to describe. I have said so before that when you meet such a situation, your first task is to halt the drift. When you halt the drift , then you stabilise before you begin to go. There is no miracle about it.

“i don’t think that anybody who understands the challenge of nation-building, of national economic management and so on will expect that in two years you can fix in a sustainable manner all of the things that have been destroyed over 16 years before this party came into office.

“Yes , there are challenges; there are a couple of things we need to begin to do and reinforce but there is no question that a lot has begun and a lot is being done.”

Also, a human rights lawyer, Falana, took a swipe at the former President, saying he had the opportunity to provide good leadership and make Nigeria great but failed to do so.

Speaking while fielding questions from journalists in Benin, the Edo State capital, on Friday , Falana said, “if President Obasanjo, who ruled this country for 11 and a half years , had institutionalised democracy , rule of law and respect for human rights, we would not be in this mess. So , please , let Obasanjo and others be honest to admit that they brought us to this shameful episode.”

While criticising the former president for not admitting his poor leadership records in different sectors of the economy, including oil and power, Falana said, “Nobody has apologised. The fact that between 1999 and 2007, this country made close to $ 100 bn from the sale of one commodity ( oil); what is there to show for it, rather than permanent darkness ?
“What is there to celebrate; mass unemployment ; sale of national assets to a few boys who were close to the presidency; rigging of elections ?”

The human rights lawyer, therefore, called on Obasanjo to stop insulting the collective intelligence of Nigerians.

He added, “With great respect to former President Olusegun Obasanjo , apart from the allegations of nepotism and clannishness , which cannot be disputed , every other allegation made there ( in the statement ) took place under President Obasanjo and, in fact, he institutionalised the culture of impunity under the democratic dispensation in Nigeria.

“But I do not want to take issues with Obasanjo for now on his letter so that one is not seen as endorsing impunity in our country.”

Why Many Stakeholders See Sen. Sharafadeen Alli as Oyo’s Best Bet for 2027 After Winning Daily Independent’s 2025 Best Legislator Award

Published

By Seun Oloketuyi

As the race for the 2027 Oyo State governorship gradually gathers momentum, growing voices within the All Progressives Congress (APC) are presenting Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli as a leading contender whose experience and policy direction position him as a strong option for the state’s next leadership. Supporters argue that his long-standing involvement in governance across multiple levels gives him a rare blend of grassroots and executive experience.

Notably, his profile received a further boost after he was honoured with the 2025 Best Legislator Award by the Daily Independent in Lagos.
Alli’s political journey began at the local government level as chairman of Ibadan North Local Government in 1991, a role often credited with shaping his grassroots appeal. He later moved to the heart of state administration, serving as Secretary to the State Government and Chief of Staff under former governor Rashidi Ladoja from 2003 to 2007, where he was involved in coordinating policies and overseeing implementation. His tenure as chairman of the Odu’a Group further expanded his profile into economic and corporate governance before his election to the Senate to represent Oyo South.
Within the All Progressives Congress, party leaders in the influential Ibarapa zone have already endorsed him as their preferred aspirant, citing his loyalty to the party, ability to unite stakeholders, and deep connection with grassroots structures. His declaration in Ibadan attracted key APC figures, including Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu, former First Lady Florence Ajimobi, and Senator Teslim Folarin, reinforcing perceptions of growing internal backing.
Beyond endorsements, Alli has laid out a policy blueprint that focuses on strengthening local government autonomy, improving security, repositioning education as a hub for innovation, upgrading healthcare services, and revitalising the state economy through agriculture, rural electrification, and better road networks. Supporters say the agenda directly targets issues many residents identify as their most pressing concerns.
He has also criticised the Peoples Democratic Party-led administration in the state, promising to address perceived governance lapses and revive local government administration. At the same time, his alignment with the reform agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is viewed by party insiders as a signal of potential federal–state collaboration that could attract development opportunities.
While the APC primaries remain ahead and other aspirants are expected to emerge, supporters say Alli’s mix of experience, endorsements, legislative recognition, and policy focus explains why many within the party are already describing him as Oyo’s “best bet” for the 2027 governorship race.

Opposition Won’t Scare Me, I Won’t Run From Nigeria’s Challenges —– Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu says he is not intimidated by the opposition, describing them as “noise-makers” who do not respect the rule of law.

He stated this during a meeting with leaders and coordinators of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors from the 36 states of the federation at the State House, Abuja, on Thursday.

The group was led by Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, who is the Director-General of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors.

“They want to scare me off? It is a lie. I have been through this path before,” the President said.

“One thing that you need from me is a promise: I won’t run away from the affairs of the nation. With you, the deal is done.”

Recalling his experience in the 2023 election, the President said the process was challenging but ultimately successful.

“During the primary that brought me here, it was tough. During the general election that brought me here, it was tough,” he said.

Tinubu told the gathering that his political journey, including the primaries and general election that brought him to office, had already prepared him for the current challenges, insisting he would not be distracted.

“I have listened to various comments. I am inspired by all of you. This is an opportunity of a lifetime to break the shackles of poverty and ignorance. To put freedom in the heart of our people, to ensure democracy survives. Not the noise-making, not the rascality of street convention.

“We cannot submit to disobedience of a lawful order of the court. We must embrace the judiciary, whether it favours us or not. We submit to this principle of democracy, separation of powers, and understanding of the dynamics of it, and the nationhood that Nigeria is.

“That we must build one country… one common vision for the progress and prosperity of our people. That’s what Renewed Hope is all about,” he said.

He urged members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to remain united, saying the party must stand against those he said do not want national transformation.

The President also criticised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), referencing his past role as Chairman of the National Council on Privatisation.

Tinubu questioned the outcomes of some privatisation exercises carried out under Atiku’s tenure.

“If you look at one of them… no one without history among this calabash. The head was the Chairman of the Privatisation Council of Nigeria at one time. He privatised the steel industry in Delta— is it working today? No.

“They privatised Ajaokuta. Is it working today? Go on the list. They privatised another man’s political party. That one said no,” he said, drawing a huge laughter from the audience.

Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to governance and national development.

“Let’s go into the details of what we promised Nigerians, and I promise, I won’t let you down,” he said.

He also said the Renewed Hope Ambassadors had been mobilised and empowered to support the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
