TAISUED Students Go On Rampage Over Colleague’s Death In Ogun State, Burn Houses

Published

  • No less than four houses have reportedly been set ablaze.

Leaders of the Imaweje community around Ijagun, Ijebu-Ode in Ogun State, took to their heels, as a bloody clash broke out between residents and the students of Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun.

It was gathered that violence erupted when a yet-to-be-identified 300-level student was killed by members of the host community. The host community reportedly accused the student of being a cultist, after which he was allegedly murdered.

News of the student’s death was said to have filtered into the school and students’ residences, which led to reprisals by his schoolmates, who stormed the community.

They reportedly invaded the house of the community leader and set it ablaze, while other chiefs’ houses were also torched. The community leaders were said to have fled the community for safety, while the students that lived in the community were said to have also deserted their houses.

According to a resident of the community, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, the whole community had been deserted. The source said the crisis was escalated by some students believed to be cultists, who, he said, claimed to be protesting the death of one of them.

“The crisis started on Friday but escalated today (Sunday).

“He was beaten by the community for being a cultist. He was left after he was beaten, but, when he was taken to the hospital, he was already pronounced dead.

“So, the students became angry and went on a rampage to the extent of setting ablaze the building belonging to the baale of the community and other houses which served as students’ hostel.

“As of the last count, four houses have been set ablaze.

“No death was recorded apart from the student. And the whole place has been deserted,” the source was quoted as saying.

Ogun Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Abimbola Oyeyemi confirmed the incident, saying some students suspected to be cultists beat two of their colleagues for refusing to be initiated by them.

The police spokesman explained that the student after he escaped, reported the incident to the community and in the process of searching for the suspected cultists, they caught one, beat him up, and took him to the village head.

Oyeyemi revealed that the community head then ordered that they should take him to the hospital, and on the way to the hospital, the student died.

NCC Unveils Initiative To Combat Fraud, Spam Messaging

Published

on

The Nigerian Communications Commission has unveiled a draft regulatory framework aimed at addressing fraud, spam, and other challenges in the “Application-to-Person” messaging sector.

The telecom regulator made this announcement in a statement on Friday.

The proposed framework was introduced during a virtual Stakeholders’ Forum, a key step towards enhancing the sector’s integrity and ensuring a fair, transparent environment for all parties involved.

The draft framework, presented by the acting Head of Legal and Regulatory Services at the NCC, Mrs. Chizua Whyte, on behalf of the Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida, seeks to regulate the A2P messaging space.

A2P messaging, used for notifications such as bank alerts, promotional campaigns, and government updates, has become a vital communication tool in Nigeria.

However, the sector faces significant challenges, including consumer protection concerns, fraud, and data privacy issues, as well as an unequal distribution of value within the ecosystem.

“The international A2P messaging space in Nigeria faces gaps that have led to issues such as fraud, spam, and data privacy concerns. These challenges threaten the sustainable growth of this communication tool,” the NCC said.

The regulator emphasised its commitment to fostering innovation while ensuring a secure, transparent environment for businesses, consumers, and service providers.

The proposed framework aims to address these challenges by protecting consumers, promoting fair competition, and holding service providers accountable.

“This forum marks a pivotal step towards addressing these challenges,” the NCC said. “We are here to engage with all stakeholders—operators, aggregators, businesses, service providers, and consumers—to refine the framework and ensure it meets the needs of the entire ecosystem.”

The NCC stressed the importance of inclusivity and collaboration in creating an effective regulatory environment.

The commission’s efforts are focused on promoting a sustainable A2P messaging ecosystem that enables business innovation, enhances communication efficiency, and supports Nigeria’s socio-economic growth.

Stakeholders were encouraged to provide feedback and contribute ideas during the forum to help shape the final framework.

The NCC reiterated its commitment to creating a regulatory environment that supports innovation while safeguarding the interests of all stakeholders in the A2P messaging sector.

For further updates, the NCC urged stakeholders to remain engaged throughout the regulatory process, stressing the importance of cooperation in shaping the future of A2P messaging in Nigeria.

“To alleviate transport costs during this holiday season, Dangote Refinery is offering a holiday discount on “PMS” (“petrol”). From today, our petrol will be available at N899.50 per litre at our truck loading gantry or SPM,” Chiejina said.
