The Senate on Tuesday set a two-week target to amend the 1999 Constitution to enable the creation of state and community police in Nigeria.

This move is part of the outcome of the lawmakers’ deliberation on the security challenges confronting the country.

Hundreds of Nigerians have lost their lives in 2018 in clashes mostly involving herdsmen and farmers.

“The Senate should direct its constitutional review committee to put in machinery to amend the constitution to allow for the creation of State Police,” the Senate President Bukola Saraki read.

Saraki vowed that the senate would continue to hold the Executive accountable over the persistent killings in parts of the country.

He also said the senators ”Urge the Executive arm of Government to apprehend and prosecute all perpetrators and sponsors of violence, no matter how highly placed they are.”
