The corpse of a detective attached to the Special Anti- Robbery Squad, SARS, Ikeja, Lagos State Police Command, Musa Sunday, who disappeared into thin air 6 months ago, has been found in a shallow grave at the Ibeju Lekki area of the state.

Sunday was reportedly abducted, tortured and later buried alive while on illegal duty at Ibeju Lekki.

He and four of his men were alleged to have been drafted to guard a land, which was under dispute by their Admin Officer (AO), at Ibeju Lekki.

According to New Telegraph, the policemen were drafted to the disputed land without the knowledge of the Officer in Charge of SARS (OC) and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr Fatai Owoseni.

The skeleton of the 45-year-old, a father of four children, was exhumed from a shallow grave after six months’ search.

The police have arrested at least five persons including a traditional ruler, in connection with the murder of the inspector.

The newspaper reports that the police are hunting for one Mr Balogun, who led the hoodlums that attacked, abducted and buried Sunday alive.

The newspaper reported that it was the fleeing Balogun that tied the hands of the Inspector before burying him alive. Balogun’s second in command, Arokin is in police custody and is helping the police with investigation.

The suspects, during interrogations, confessed to have buried the officer alive after starving him for more than five days.

They also admitted to have buried him alive on the orders of a traditional ruler, who has interest in the land under dispute.

Inspector Sunday was abducted sometimes in November, while guarding the disputed land. The abductors made away with his rifle. The Inspector, who was the leader of the team, was on duty with four other policemen.

The abductors, alleged to be armed to the teeth, stormed the land on that fateful day in November and overpowered Sunday, his policemen and civilian guards, patrolling the area.

Sunday was said to have been kidnapped when he confronted a large number of thugs from the other faction.

After his abduction, his phone stopped going through. His colleagues became frantic. Sunday’s wife and family members besieged the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters, Ikeja, demanding to know what had become of him.

Speaking with a journalists a few months after the abduction of Sunday, his wife, Halimat, 27, said that, “They were deployed there to maintain peace. We learnt that hoodlums were attacking a man, so my husband and his men moved to rescue the man. He told the other two policemen to go and put the man in the car so he could be safe.

“The hoodlums pounced on my husband and took him away. Sensing danger as the hoodlums kept increasing in number, his men ran away. Since then, we have not heard from him.

“Three months after, police kept telling us that they were on the matter. We learnt they have arrested the Prince that hired the hoodlums, but nothing has happened since then. His children keep asking after him. His aged mother, who has high blood pressure, has not stopped asking for his whereabouts. We don’t know what else to tell her.

“Nobody from the police cared to check on us, and now we don’t have money because we don’t have access to his ATM pin.

“I want my husband to come back. The children are suffering, and I can’t carry the load alone.”

The Oyo state police command on Monday paraded 21 suspects arrested in connection with the invasion of the state secretariat in Ibadan, the state’s capital.

On Saturday, security operatives arrested 16 “gunmen” suspected to be members of a group identified as Oodua nation agitators for invading the state secretariat.

The gunmen, who were said to be dressed in military camouflage, were subdued by security personnel.

The security personnel were able to arrest some of the gunmen while others took to their heels and were pursued into the nearby bushes.

Sources said the gunmen were heading to the Oyo state house of assembly premises located within the secretariat when they were repelled.

They were also said to have removed the Nigerian national flag in the secretariat and replaced it with the “Oodua nation flag”, before the intervention of the security personnel.

In a statement on Monday, the Oyo state police command said 21 “Yoruba Nation Agitators“ have been paraded in Ibadan.

They were paraded alongside seized exhibits such as guns, ammunition, cutlasses, walkie-talkies, and other communication gadgets.

He added that investigations are ongoing to unmask their sponsors, and other suspects still at large.

Jnr. Pope: My Opinion On The Boat Crash That Claimed The Life Of Nollywood Talents By Seun Oloketuyi

Published

It is sad and still very hard to refer to Jnr Pope and others who lost their life in the ill-fated boat ride as deceased. Jnr Pope was full of life and hardworking, as I’m sure were those who died with him. Unfortunately, I never met nor did I work with them but having done quite a few productions, I know that except for a few exceptions, these guys live below the line in NOLLYWOOD).

Although I am not someone who likes to look back when these kind of things happen, I will this time because we lost five bright souls.

I think AGN and AMP need to be pro active and ask serious, salient questions going forward:

1. Do Nollywood productions, especially those with high level risks like shooting late at night, have standard safety procedures?

2. Can we organise crash programmes of safety procedures when incidents like these take place so that people know what to do?

3. Can yhe guilds have safety experts in its executives to advise accordingly?

Finally, it is time our actors learn to use social media. Accidents happen everywhere but you won’t see a lawyer do a live video of such events or post pictures of their colleagues’ corpses. It is becoming crazy. In fact, it looked like some were more engrossed in making live videos than helping.

RIP to the dead practitioners.

FG Begs Workers As Electricity Union Insists On Strike Over Tariff Hike

Published

on

The Federal Government has appealed to members of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) not to go on strike over the recent hike in electricity tariff.

This comes amidst the union’s decision to withdraw  their services should the government fail to rescind its decision on the removal of subsidy on the tariff payable by Band A customers.

Adebiyi Adeyeye, the National President of the union, on Sunday said the union stood by its warning to the Federal Government.

Recall that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) had on April 3 raised the electricity tariff for customers enjoying 20 hours of power supply daily.

Customers in this category were said to be under the Band A classification and the increase raised their tariff to N225 per kilowatt-hour, from N66KWh.

In its earlier reaction, the union had warned the government to reverse the tariff hike saying, “If the government fails to address the crippling cost of electricity, NUEE will not hesitate to take strong action, including the swift withdrawal of our members expected to be used by DisCos to impose the tariff hike on the good people, to protect the livelihood of our members.”

Adeyeye said the supply of 20 hours of electricity is not feasible with the current infrastructure.

“We just want the citizen to know that this thing is not possible, it is not feasible, you cannot give what you don’t have. When we don’t have the energy to give to the people and you ask our people to go out and collect such money, you know it is dangerous. Most times we don’t disclose what to do to the public because our sector is very critical to the nation,” he stated.

While saying that the union has yet to give any ultimatum on strike, he stressed the NUEE is advising the government to do the needful “before we will withdraw our services”.

He explained, “The reason why we are saying this is simple, you ask our members to go the the public to collect 20-hour tariff from people that are not even experiencing a four-hour supply of electricity. There is no way there won’t be crises between our staff and those customers.

“We’ve recorded a lot of attacks on our members, even with the present situation. And these guys have nothing to defend themselves. They have targets to meet where there is no supply. Our members are being threatened by the DisCos, even when they know that what they are promising Nigerians is not feasible”.

He disclosed that the union must save its members from daily attacks, saying the hike would aggravate the attacks.

“We told our members that they cannot go out and collect that kind of tariff from unmetered customers. More than 70 per cent of these Band A customers are not metered. The government is just promising what we don’t have. We are the ones working there, we know we don’t have the transformers to distribute such load. 20 hours of electricity is not possible except for those on eligible lines. We were not carried before the tariff hike,” the union leader emphasised.

Adeyeye, who said the union would not accept any threat from anyone said, “On the issue of strike, it is not what we normally do directly. We said it that we would withdraw our services if the government fails to do the needful, and we are still under that ‘if’. They still have time to do the needful. It is very difficult for us to collect such money. We don’t have the equipment to supply even 10 hours of electricity to the people.

“We stand on our point, and they can’t bring people from anywhere to come and do this work. We Nigerians will do this work ourselves and heaven will not fall. If they fail to do the needful, we will withdraw our members, and we will never accept any threat from anybody. Nigeria belongs to all of us”.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has urged the union not to withdraw its members.

In an interview, Adelabu, who spoke through his media aide, Bolaji Tunji, said the government was doing everything to improve supply in Nigeria and everybody will be happy at the end of the day.

“We just want to appeal to the labour union to understand what led to this. This is not about strike. it is about understanding; so that we can all work together. It is not anybody’s joy that there are blackouts all the time. These steps are being taken to solve the problems in the power sector. I beg the labour union to understand that this will galvanise the economy and create jobs.

“I want to appeal to the union to bear with us. It is for the good of the nation,” he stated.
