Tanko Yakasai, an elder statesman and a founding member of the Arewa Consultative Forum, has stated his belief that President Bola Tinubu is currently the most favored individual to secure victory in the 2027 election. This assessment comes from a prominent figure in Nigerian politics.
Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Yakasai conveyed his opinion that no politician currently possesses stronger support than Tinubu. His statement highlights the perceived advantage held by the incumbent president.
“In Nigeria today, Bola Tinubu is the president; he has his ministers and governors who are backing him,” Yakasai said. This quote emphasizes the inherent advantages of incumbency, including the support of key government officials.
“Who else has all what it takes to move into the contest with the kind of stamina and strength to be more successful comparatively with Tinubu?” Yakasai questioned. This rhetorical question underscores his view of Tinubu’s current standing in the political arena.
Yakasai noted that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) holds control over a majority of states and continues to receive support from governors within opposition parties. This observation points to the APC’s widespread influence and reach across the country.
“We should all wait and see if the picture will change drastically, otherwise for now, the odds are in his favour because I have not seen anything that will prevent him from winning the next election,” Yakasai said. This statement reflects his current assessment of the political landscape and the perceived likelihood of Tinubu’s re-election.
“He hasn’t done anything against the north, in my understanding, and the north alone cannot decide who becomes the president of the country.” Yakasai added. This addresses a potential regional factor in the upcoming election, suggesting that nationwide support will be crucial.
The elder statesman also stated that there is no official consensus yet among the northern political class regarding the 2027 elections. This indicates that the northern region, a significant voting bloc, has not yet unified behind a single candidate.
“I haven’t heard anybody making any proposition about the 2027 presidential election from Arewa Consultative Forum,” he said. This quote clarifies the stance of a prominent northern forum on the upcoming election.
“What is tagged the Arewa Consultative Forum or Northern Elders Forum’s position is mere individual opinions, because all sections of the north have not taken a stand on this.” Yakasai explained. This further emphasizes the lack of a unified northern position and suggests that reported stances may not be representative of the entire region.
He advised Nigerians to wait until the northern region formally establishes its position, further suggesting that internal crises within opposition parties have made Tinubu’s path to re-election potentially smoother. This implies that the disarray within opposing parties could benefit the incumbent.
Yakasai refrained from evaluating Tinubu’s performance but urged politicians to prioritize the interests of the public. This suggests a focus on governance and public service rather than purely political maneuvering.
“Our politicians should see politics as a dynamic game, and what I will advise is for them to play the game on the basis of ideology and programmes,” he said. This quote encourages a focus on policy and principles in political competition.
“Let them envision the way they want the country to be and not targeting to be ministers, governors and president. After becoming all these and nothing is done in the interest of the country, we will not get better. They should eschew politics of ethnicity and religion because not making our country the focal point of our politics has held us down for so long.” Yakasai elaborated, emphasizing the need for a vision for the country that transcends individual ambition and divisive politics.
On Friday, Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced that all political parties in Akwa Ibom have merged into a single entity. This development in a key southern state could have implications for the broader political landscape.
He further stated that this movement will support the re-election bids of President Bola Tinubu, the governor of the state Umo Eno, and himself. This endorsement from a significant political figure underscores the growing support for Tinubu’s potential re-election.
