Prior to her passing, legendary musician and actress Onyeka Onwenu had expressed her final wishes regarding her burial.
In January 2022, shortly after celebrating her 70th birthday, Onwenu made it clear to her family that she desired a simple and intimate farewell.
She requested that her burial be carried out swiftly, without fanfare, and in private, away from public attention.
“I’ve told my family how I want to be buried. Do it quickly, quietly, and privately. Celebrate me with prayers, lunch or dinner afterward. Share some jokes about me and laugh. Mourn, but not excessively. Make merriment and then go about your business.
“If my friends want to celebrate me, they should do so while I’m alive, so I can enjoy it with them, not when I’m gone and have no idea,” she said.
Sadly, Onyeka Onwenu passed away yesterday in Lagos at the age of 72, shortly after performing at a birthday event.
The renowned singer/songwriter, actress, human rights activist, journalist, and politician was a woman of many parts, and she made positive impacts on society.
Until her passing, she remained passionate about her home state, Imo, and spoke out against the rising insecurity that threatened its peaceful and hospitality reputation.
