The Bauchi State Police Command has impounded a vehicle carrying 387 blocks of suspected cannabis sativa after it was involved in a head-on collision in Toro Local Government Area of the state.
While handing over the seized substance to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Friday, the Commissioner of Police, Sani Omolori-Aliyu, said the crash occurred on October 4 in Wom village.
He explained that the accident involved two white Toyota Corolla cars. One of the vehicles, with registration number ABC-459LF, was driven by Ali Muhammad, aged 45, who was transporting the District Head of Nabardo, Suleiman Suleiman, 65, and his family from Bauchi metropolis to Nabardo village.
The second vehicle, with registration number GWA-155GW, was reportedly driven by an unidentified person travelling from Jos, Plateau State, to Bauchi.
Omolori-Aliyu said preliminary investigations revealed that the driver of the second vehicle attempted a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre, leading to the fatal collision. He added that all occupants sustained injuries and were taken to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) for treatment, while the district head suffered a fractured left leg.
Following the crash, police officers discovered 387 blocks of suspected cannabis in one of the damaged vehicles. The commissioner said the command was now pursuing the unidentified driver linked to the contraband to ensure accountability.
He appealed to the public to assist by providing useful information about the suspect’s identity.
“We invite anyone with information that could aid in this investigation to contact us and we assure citizens that we are resolutely focused on ensuring justice is achieved,” he said.
Receiving the items, Hussaini Umar, Deputy Commandant of the NDLEA, commended the police for their swift action and assured that both agencies would work together to track down the suspect and maintain peace in the state.
