A building collapsed at the Agindigbi area of Lagos on Tuesday, leaving three people trapped.

According to the Lagos state emergency management agency (LASEMA), which confirmed the incident, two of the trapped victims were rescued while one died.

The identity of the deceased was given as Faisa Mohammed, a 24-year-old woman who got married in Adamawa state two weeks ago.

LASEMA said it received a distress call through the emergency toll-free line 112/767 at about 10.54 am about a mudslide on illegal shanties around Kuata Area by Amara Olu street, Mechanic Village, Agidingbi, Ikeja.

“Three persons were discovered trapped under the mud,” it said.

“The agency’s ERT were able to rescue two people (a male and a female) while one adult female lost her life and the dead was recovered by the agency’s emergency response team.

“The agency’s ERT and men of the Nigerian police from Alausa Division, RRS and the Nigerian security and civil defence LASAMBUS, NEMA, were on ground for the recovery operation.”

Michael Akindele, general manager of LASEMA, said the area is a wet land and a buffer zone, which is not habitable for human settlement.

He recalled that the state government had been warning people living in flood-prone and wet lands to vacate such areas to prevent loss of lives, particularly with the return of the rains.
