Natasha Heads To Court After Senate Blockade, Faults Akpabio

Published

on

The senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who is currently under suspension, has announced plans to take the Senate leadership to the appellate court after being denied entry into the National Assembly complex on Tuesday.

Clearly angered, Akpoti-Uduaghan informed reporters that she would immediately consult with her lawyers to begin the legal process, describing the Senate’s action as a breach of the recent court ruling in her favour.

Her response followed the refusal of security personnel to grant her access to the National Assembly, despite a judicial order that nullified her extended suspension.

She also questioned the legitimacy of her suspension from the start, saying, “Even the suspension ab initio was fraudulent— it was faulty.”

On what she plans to do next, she stated, “Going forward, I will have a meeting with my legal team so they can proceed to the appellate court to seek interpretation of what just happened. I am a law-abiding citizen.”

Akpoti-Uduaghan further criticised the Senate’s move, describing it as defiance of the judiciary led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

She said, “Akpabio cannot be greater than the Nigerian Constitution. I want Nigerians to know that the Office of the Senate President doesn’t give me legitimacy as a senator.

“The fact that he has gone on appeal does not invalidate the decision of Justice Binta Nyako, and that does not stop me from being a senator.

I got my legitimacy as a senator from the people of Kogi, who voted me into office as senator.

“That I have been denied entrance to the National Assembly is a statement being made. It’s on record that the National Assembly under Akpabio has decided to be in contempt of a court decision, and it’s quite ironic that they are lawmakers. That poses the question: how far is our democracy in this day and age?”

Earlier that day, Akpoti-Uduaghan arrived at the Assembly premises where her supporters had gathered in anticipation of her return.

A noticeable increase in security was seen at the entrance, with heavily-armed personnel inspecting vehicles and restricting entry to only the external parking area.

At least five police patrol vans were positioned at key points near the Assembly’s main gate.

Akpoti-Uduaghan later arrived with activist Aisha Yesufu, co-founder of the #BringBackOurGirls campaign.

However, the security agents refused them access to the building.

During the altercation, Yesufu expressed strong disapproval, accusing the police of acting unlawfully and warning them they might one day need public support.

“One day you will be on the streets, as a retired person, begging the same people you oppressed to protest on your behalf.”

Frustrated by the restriction, she urged the officers to reconsider their part in shaping the country’s future.

“At this age, is this what you want to be doing? Is this the Nigeria you want for your children? You’re destroying the future of your own children,” she declared.

She also criticised the officers for not revealing who ordered the blockade.

“We respect the law, but that does not mean we are cowards. This is the National Assembly—it belongs to all Nigerians. You are blocking people and can’t even say who sent you. Are you proud of that?”

She went on to describe the police force as “a shameless willing tool of oppression,” recalling an earlier protest held in support of police welfare that was ironically disrupted by other officers.

As of the time of filing this report, there had been no official reaction from the Senate on the standoff.

Two days prior, the Senate had reiterated its earlier stance, maintaining that the senator remains barred from participating in its activities until her suspension period lapses.

The Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs Chairman, Yemi Adaramodu, reaffirmed on Sunday that no court had issued a binding order for her immediate reinstatement.

Akpoti-Uduaghan, however, maintained that while her suspension did not prevent her from continuing her work in her constituency, it had stopped her from fulfilling essential legislative responsibilities such as bill sponsorship and motion presentation.

Her legal representative, West Idahosa, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, backed her claims by stating the court ruling permitted her to return.

“Let me be honest with you. Attendance is a legislative action. As far as we are concerned, we are focused on the appeal and other issues before the court.

“I think the decision to go back to the Senate will be determined by the constituents.

“Now that she said she wants to go and resume, let us see what the reaction of the Senate will be. But the most important thing is that she is still a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said in a phone interview.

Akpoti-Uduaghan was previously suspended for six months following her involvement in a seating dispute within the chamber.

However, a Federal High Court decision issued by Justice Nyako annulled that suspension, prompting the senator to attempt to resume her legislative functions.

Lawyer faults Natasha

Prominent legal practitioner Ken Harris criticised Akpoti-Uduaghan for attempting to act on a court ruling that she had already appealed against, describing her actions as trying to “eat her cake and still have it.”

Harris issued a statement on Tuesday responding to her attempted return to the National Assembly.

He questioned the appropriateness of her approach, describing it as “taking the law into her own hands.”

“In all my years of legal practice, I’ve never seen such a blatant display of lawlessness from someone who is supposed to be a federal lawmaker.

“How do you storm the National Assembly with a group of partisans under the guise of enforcing a judgment?

“There are proper legal procedures for enforcing court judgments. It is not for individuals to create a crisis atmosphere and claim they are enforcing the law,” he added.

He pointed out that she had already filed an appeal challenging the judgment about a week ago and was asking the Court of Appeal to reverse it.

Harris questioned her logic: “How can you seek to enforce a judgment you have openly rejected, appealed against, and asked to be set aside?

“Even if the judgment was still valid and enforceable, has she complied with all the orders contained in it, including the payment of N5m and a public apology published in two newspapers and on her Facebook page?

“If she has failed to obey those aspects of the judgment, on what moral ground does she accuse the Senate leadership of lawlessness?” Harries asked.

He ended by advising her legal team to provide better guidance that respects the rule of law.

“Anyone who seeks equity must come with clean hands,” the lawyer said.

Attempts to reach Akpoti-Uduaghan’s aides and legal counsel for an official response were unsuccessful as they could not be contacted by phone at the time this report was filed.

Abiodun, Osoba, Amosun, Daniel Endorse Yayi Ogun APC Gov Candidate

The Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, on Monday, adopted the senator representing Ogun West Senatorial District, Solomon Adeola, popularly called Yayi, as its governorship candidate for the 2027 general elections.

The decision to field the lawmaker as the party’s governorship candidate was announced at a state strategic caucus meeting presided over by the state chairman of the party, Yemi Sanusi, and held at the party secretariat in Abeokuta.

The meeting was attended by Governor Dapo Abiodun, former governors Chief Olusegun Osoba, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, and Gbenga Daniel, despite his reported suspension by the party since August last year.

Others present included Senator Iyabo Obasanjo; Gboyega Isiaka, who represents Imeko/Afon Federal Constituency and is also a governorship aspirant; and other serving and former members of the state House of Assembly and National Assembly.

Abiodun, at the event, announced Adeola as the party’s consensus governorship candidate and urged other aspirants to rally round him, stressing the need for party unity over personal interests.

The announcement was followed by jubilation among party members, who chanted, “Yayi ni jo, Yayi ni jare.”

In his acceptance speech, Adeola thanked party members for the confidence reposed in him, pledging not to disappoint the party.

He said, “Now is all the sacrifices that my brothers have put together to ensure this day comes to pass.

I believe in oneness and the unity of our dear state and Ogun West by extension.

“I know the vision for this state. I know how passionate and how central this state is to the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“As far as maintaining our status aside from being the fastest-growing economy in Nigeria, all efforts that have been put in place to ensure that we reposition this state and take our pride of place in the comity of states in this country are well recognised.

“Your Excellency, my dear leaders who are here, I want to assure you that I will not let you down.

“I promise to keep the flag flying. I promise to retain and maintain the unity, peace, and progress that have taken place in Ogun State for the last three years and beyond. I can assure you I will not derail.

“I will not derail the ship I am about to take over. I will make sure that it does not derail, and by the special grace of God, I will do my best, my utmost best, to keep every member of our great party together, to keep the state together, and to ensure that irrespective of our political alignment, we are one indivisible family.”

Yayi added, “Going forward from today, Your Excellency and all the leaders of the party, I want to assure you that a new Ogun State is born, and everything that needs to be done to keep us together, to keep us as one indivisible entity, so that we can take Ogun State to the promised land and to the next level we all desire, will be done.”

The state chairman, Yemi Sanusi, said the meeting was convened to preserve party unity before, during, and after the primaries.

He stressed the importance of rancour-free primaries, noting that the caucus meeting was aimed at carrying all stakeholders along and ensuring the party remained united ahead of the 2027 elections.

It was reported on March 24, 2026, that the APC is moving toward a consensus arrangement to settle on the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat, as its governorship candidate for the 2027 election in Lagos State.

The report added that party stakeholders also favoured the Yayi for Ogun State, and the senator representing Oyo South Senatorial District, Sharafadeen Alli, for Oyo State.

The purported decisions, according to that report, emerged from a meeting of APC stakeholders from the three states with President Bola Tinubu in Lagos during the Sallah holiday.

Following the consensus, Iyabo Obasanjo, on Monday, suspended her governorship ambition.

In a statement she signed and made available to journalists, the daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo stated that she had decided to put her ambition on hold following the party’s pick of Yayi as consensus candidate.

The former lawmaker representing Ogun Central between 2007 and 2011 congratulated Yayi and wished him well in his future endeavours.

Obasanjo equally thanked the party leaders and all her supporters across the state, praising them for their unwavering steadfastness and unprecedented support while her consultation across the state lasted.

She stated that “At the Ogun APC caucus meeting held today, April 13, 2026, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (Yayi) was announced as the consensus candidate of our party for the 2027 gubernatorial election.

“I congratulate him and wish him every success. I also thank the state and national leaders of our great party for the opportunity to participate in the nomination process.

“Based on these developments, I have decided to suspend my gubernatorial aspiration.

“To my supporters across Ogun State, I am deeply grateful for your calm, steadfast support and unwavering trust throughout this journey. Together, we move forward with patience, strength and hope.”

FG Waives Import Duties On Mass Transit Buses, EVs, Machinery, Others [FULL LIST]

Published

on

The Federal Government has waived import duties on electric vehicles, mass transit buses, and manufacturing machinery as part of new fiscal measures aimed at easing economic pressure on Nigerians and curbing inflationary pressures.

The disclosure was contained in an X post on Monday by Dada Olusegun, Special Assistant to the President on Social Media.

The development followed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive to key economic officials to design measures to cushion the impact of the ongoing Middle East crisis on Nigerians, particularly amid rising fuel prices.

The Special Assistant to the President on Social Media said the Tinubu administration approved a broad set of import duty reductions to lower inflation, support businesses, and improve affordability for consumers.

“President Tinubu’s administration has approved a massive reduction in import duties of selected products to further reduce inflation, empower local businesses, and increase affordability for consumers,” he said.

Under the new policy, import duties on electric vehicles were reduced from 5% to 0%. Mass transit buses were also granted full duty exemption, down from 5% to 0%, to encourage cheaper public transportation and support cleaner mobility alternatives.

The levy on manufacturing machinery was equally scrapped, falling from 5% to 0%, in a move aimed at lowering production costs and boosting industrial activity.

Beyond these categories, the policy introduced broader tariff adjustments across key import segments.

Passenger vehicle duties were reduced from 70% to 40%, while tariffs on bulk rice were cut from 70% to 47.5% and broken rice from 70% to 30%.

Raw cane sugar was adjusted from 70% to between 55% and 57.5%, while crude palm oil duties were reduced from 35% to 28.75%.

In the industrial and construction sector, steel sheets and coils were lowered from 45% to 35%, while glazed ceramic tiles were reduced from 55% to 46.25%, in a move aimed at easing production and construction costs.

The post also confirmed a 90-day transition phase beginning April 1, described as a “Transition Phase”, to allow markets to adjust gradually and avoid sudden shocks as the new tariff regime takes effect.
